General / Off-Topic Ready Player one.

It's a really, really good film. I give it a mere 7/10, but still recommend a viewing from anyone who likes films/games. You'll get a buzz when you spot something and the Oasis should put your imagination into high gear with possibilities.
It's not a classic, but it does not try to be one, it's just a great way to bury your face in a bucket of popcorn and be entertained. (I think I know why I-Rok ends up with tentacles, he's got strange viewing habits as regards Anime) ;)

does anyone know these guys?

Imagine at some point in the future there is a similar Easter egg hunt for control of the Elite universe !

I don't get why 'older' characters are portrayed as tech idiots since they would remember that era.

I felt like it made a parody of gamers and gamer culture - maybe I'm wrong, I thought the author of the book embraced gamer culture with a little more respect and fondness.

I thought it was a homage to gaming and pop culture and the retro aspects of it.

For example:

Atari 2600

...... you had to be there.

It's also a parable.

The real problem Spielberg doesn't understand the interactive aspect of gaming. The message is anti VR 'Only reality is real' . In a recent interview he is talking about wanting to se a VR Jurrasic Park if the technology was up to the job. It is already. It has been shouwn that if you give the brain just enough information it fils in the rest.

Also the whole point of this kind of scifi is about showing the consequences of the tech. I didn't like the ending. When Parzival gets the Oasis then closes it down so other can live in the real wortld but his reality has changed with no regard to people still living in stacks.

Also what do they all do for a living to pay for all the electricity online subscription fees?

The whole virtual economy was properly explained in the book, sadly this was all missing in the film. Also the whole turning off on tuesdays and thursdays was a bit daft, and only tries to emphasise the whole bad dystopian world vibe.

This will likely be a latch point to the planned sequel.

This is not about 2045 its about 2018. The film partly filmedin 'The City of Birmingham' to depict the slightly more upmarket location of this this dystopian future. Although I'm pretty sure the Stacks is just one estate away two.

I'm still wondering why Ready player one was picked up quickly for film right and something like Neiromancer or Snowcrash din't. IS it a US thing including author . The book Armada is also a bit of a The Last star fighter rip off http://phaetongame.com/

Its a shame we don't get to see more UK popular culture from 80s in a big screen movie setting. Still waiting for the DR who film.

Well ED has its own 'virtual' economy going on

They tried the Dr Who film back in the 80's its the one the Whovians like to pretend never happened.

I know they did it technically 3 times but.... The other two are considered borderline canon.

The only good thing from that film was the cementing of the Tardis being really big on the inside, where up till then the TV version was limited by the set size. The series now uses a whole studio to film the Tardis inside, rather than a corner of a set where other sets were made and crammed in for each adventure.

That reply is like saying they did A Star Trek film back in the 70s so why bother with any more.

Considering all the remakes these days they could slip that one in.

The 2 Dr who 'films' where released in 1965

DR Who and the Daleks
Daleks - Invasion Earth 2150 A.D.

The BIG difference is DR who is depicted not a 'Time Lord' from Gall fray just a human from Earth.

The 'TV film' was released in 1996 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Doctor_Who_%28film%29

Apparently Spielberg is a fan.

But these days cinema production get dumbed down and core audience is isolated in favour of 'mass' appeal.

Spent good money on this game

Actually I was referring to the Paul McGann film, so three tries at a Dr Who film, is not a good track record. The Peter Cushing ones were pants back when they were released, but for some reason the Whovians like them for the most part.
It would be great to see one actually done well.

Star Trek has had its fair share of lemons as well Generations and 4 were meh!! and best forgotten.

Every TV series that makes it to the big screen suffers the same problem, that the films never seem to live up to the original TV outings, with the exception of Star Trek which has far out grown its original roots anyhow. Part of its continued success is due to the films recent and not so recent.

Holly Weird has proved that with some exceptions it’s currently in capable of creating completely new ideas, and is only capable of rewriting already produced stuff from decades gone by or, putting out some thing that so is intrenched in plagiarism that if it was school home work it would gain you a detention.

I travelled back in time and found this

Am I having a Icebox moment. Stephen King didn't hate his own creation which was the Book version of the shinning. The film version was done by Kubrick technically making THe film version Kubrick creation.

I remember hearing or reading somewhere he didnt approve of all the film adaptations of his books.
