Ready the whale boat lads! Unlash the harpoons!

Frontier have confirmed through brain trees and geyser fungus that life can exist in a vacuum in the ED universe.

I propose an expansion on this. Space whaling. Hunting large space-faring organisms with special equipment. Harpoon tethers, nets, etc.

You could even have a secondary profession of people trying to save the space whales by hunting & destroying the whale boats!

This is not a joke post. I reckon this could be awesome in Elite.

Great idea, especially the second part!

We can make a community goal out of it: Who will be able to eradicate those creatures fastest after their first discovery (Federation for profit vs. Empire for "nobel" sports)?
Mankind has a legacy to protect, after all!

I guess I will invest in a green paintjob and green lasers for my Vulture then. This sort of content will make me tempted to engage in some serious PvP ...
And no, please don't come to the forum then and whine about being killed "for no reasons"!

Yes please on the giant space worms hiding in asteroid fields! :D :D :D

I love the idea of space whales and hunting them... or you know, studying them. But how would this look practically in ED?

If it were out in the black you'd need a way of finding them... random USS spawns seem the likely candidate, like "Organics Detected: Threat Unknown". Or stick with the "Anomaly: Threat 4"? Then when you drop in on the signal source it's a huge pod of space whales of varying sizes with the larger ones being fiercely protective of the smaller ones, and will try to eat the ship if you aggro them. But of course, they can't die easily otherwise there'd be no point, they'd need some kind of organic shielding from beam lasers and protection from cannon.

As for locations:
- Likely to spawn in any system that could be considered inside a nebula - including small single system planetary nebulae?
- Clouds of gas giants?
- Gas giant ring systems?
- Within nav beacon distance of a star?

Let's do some theory crafting, people!

Maybe once attacked they start high-waking out in a similar fashion to the alien ship hyperdrive - that looks kind of organic.

Sandro Sammarco did mention Space Whales in the last livestream at Pax, he said they would be awesome.

I think 2.4 content is now confirmed!
