ok I am starting out with joystick for first time so want to learn on sidewinder. I want to keep my cobra. what happens to the cobra when I buy sidey and don't choose to use cobra towards cost? in other words where will my cobra be?

You'll be asked if you want to store it, if yes, it will remain at the place where you bought the Sidey. You can change at any time there.

Though you could simply use the tutorials, it's what I do when I change my control setup.

so if use only the tutorials learning the joystick then when I go back to open play I would be in cobra? um then sidewinder would be whereveri bought it?

If I remember correctly, the basic tutorials/training missions put you in a Sidewinder. You don't even need to buy one. Your game character remains where he was, in the ship he was in.
