Realistically how hard is it to get the FSD booster?

I'm staring a Saturday night in the face and decided that instead of my usual wandering about I want to actually be productive tonight so I decided that I will either try to unlock some of my missing engineers or go after the FSD booster finally. But can the FSD booster be unlocked in a single night?

Also fair warning I have next to no combat experience in the SRV. The most I've done in it is get into some seriously epic fights with rocks.

Doesn't take a huge amount of effort at all - less than an hour to get the fragments and then a couple of hours to get the mat's and scans.

Honestly, the main "problem" you're likely to have is that it might be smart to unlock other Guardian modules at the same time... and then your shopping list does start to get longer and longer.

Personally, I'd suggest unlocking the Guardian SBs as well as the FSD Booster.
They're quite a handy toy to have in a combat ship.

Shoot me a PM if you want some help in-game.

I appreciate the offer, but I play on PS4.

I think I might give it a shot. I just need to figure out how I'm gonna get out there. The smallest ship I own is my mining Phantom.

Definitely doable I'd say. I did it in an afternoon.

Regarding the ship, I did it in a DBX, and put point defense on the upper utility slot to help with the sentinel missiles, and with the DBX I was able to land right next to the site. And of course, the DBX can have pretty decent jump range to help with the trip there and back. If you want a helping hand, the thread in the spoiler is a nice walkthrough.

Biggest thing for me was redoing my SRV controls since you spend a bit of time at the wheel and my previous controls were pretty basic. Since you're on PS4 I assume the controls are already set up nicely for the controller so it should be fine :)

Yeah I've never had any trouble driving the SRV, but I've never fought in it. I've never needed to.

Speaking as an SRV non-fighter, you won't have any problems. Even the guardian scouts are really nothing more than pests.

Go for it, sir. You won't regret it

One more top-tip...

Don't forget you can use the camera-suite as a navigational aid when you're at the Guardian sites.

When you arrive, in your ship, you look down at the sites and the layout seems pretty logical and straightforward.
And then you get on the ground, in your SRV, and it's all just fog and ruins and obelisks and mounds of dirt.

Use the camera-suite to get an aerial view of the site to help figure out where you need to go.

FWIW, that's where it really helps if you can team-up with somebody to give you a hand.
They can stay in their ship and just zip around the site, directing you to objectives helping you navigate... as well as exploding sentinels.

The guardian ruins and such are the thing I detest most in the game. I even managed to get the fsd booster in about a four hour set. Check edtutorials.com with Cmdr Xegious if you have any troubles good videos with no fluff, also has good shots of the overlay of the site which make it less confusing.

I would also recommend getting the gauss cannons while you are out there for doing Thargoid interceptors one day. Then you will never have to go back.

Are point defenses actually helpful vs sentinels? I hear they prevent missile attacks, but that the missiles can't really kill you anyway.

Absolutely.

Course, they're only useful if they're mounted on a ship that can land somewhere within the ruins, themselves.
If you go in an Annie, and have to park a couple of km away, they're not going to help.
Small ship FTW.

The missiles are fairly dangerous, simply 'cos they can flip your SRV over quite easily, which means you can't defend yourself when the Sentinels attack with lasers.
And then your SRV explodes.
And then you have to go all the way back to the nearest station to replace it.

On a related note, when you're fighting with the sentinels, always face them, always put your handbrake on and then swap to the turret to fight them.

Your SRV is more stable along it's front/back axis so it's harder to flip over if you take fire to the front.
If the Sentinels hit the front of your SRV they'll push it backwards and you can keep shooting back at them.
If they hit the side of your SRV it'll flip over and you'll be defenceless until you can get back on your wheels.
Equally, with the handbrake on your SRV won't move around as much when you take fire from the sentinels.

Once you know what you're doing, the Sentinels present almost no threat at all.
If you're not familiar with them, though, the main danger is that they cause confusion and then you panic and allow bad things to happen.

Try to fight them on YOUR terms.
When you see one, just drive around in your SRV (they're not terribly aggresive so they don't really chase you) until you're in a position where you're happy about shooting at it, swap to the turret and start shooting.
When the sentinel starts to return fire, swap back to the driver seat, change position and have another go.
If your shield goes down and/or you take hull damage, head back to your ship, board it and your SRV will be repaired, then deploy it again and have another go.
Ensuring your SRV isn't destroyed is THE most important thing.... especially if you only have one.

Nice post, Stealthie. I'm looking at a tutorial right now, but ship size isn't specified for those little areas that we can park in. What's the largest thing we should be going in there with? Is a FAS or a Phantom too big? Should this be done in like a Courier, or is something even smaller like an Imp Eagle preferable?

My preference is DBX or Keelback.
Some sites you can get big ships close in, some there's no chance. Much easier with a smaller ship.
