Realistically how hard is it to get the FSD booster?

Nice post, Stealthie. I'm looking at a tutorial right now, but ship size isn't specified for those little areas that we can park in. What's the largest thing we should be going in there with? Is a FAS or a Phantom too big? Should this be done in like a Courier, or is something even smaller like an Imp Eagle preferable?

Thing is, it's as much about the "footprint" of a ship as the overall size.

I've been in a DBX and an AspX, for example, and it's pretty easy to land the DBX cos it's landing struts aren't very far apart whereas the AspX sits on four struts quite a bit further apart and that was much harder to land.
I wouldn't recommend something like a Krait/Phantom cos, again, the landing struts have a big footprint so you'll need a big, square, patch of flat ground.

Why are we even talking about this, though?
Everybody should have a DBX as a "scout" ship.
Just get one built and take that! :p

I went in my Phantom didnt have a problem getting close (i used it for the weapon blueprint, Asp X for booster). I know some of the sites are different but I had no probs with the mediums just took a couple mins of fanageling.

So now I guess I'm a DBX owner...

I got the booster automatically when I was doing stuff at the Guardian ruins, just visiting a few, driving around, looking at the gorgeous locations and collecting and scanning some stuff.
Means, if you manage to take your sights from that "I WANT THAT THING AND FAST" goal, and look around a bit and actually enjoy the whole thing, it might add to enjoyment and feel less like grinding. Never grinded anything and took my time enjoying what's out there, and I'm still sitting on lots and lots of blueprints for things I actually don't need. :D

I'm staring a Saturday night in the face and decided that instead of my usual wandering about I want to actually be productive tonight so I decided that I will either try to unlock some of my missing engineers or go after the FSD booster finally. But can the FSD booster be unlocked in a single night?

Also fair warning I have next to no combat experience in the SRV. The most I've done in it is get into some seriously epic fights with rocks.
I'd advise not trying to do it in a night. The Guardian structures are brilliantly atmospheric and it would be a shame to rush through some of the best graphical content the game has to offer. It will be much more fun to take it at your own pace rather than using a lot of external web information to rush it. I advise looking things up only when stuck, and enjoy figuring things out yourself. That way you'll have a pleasant feeling of accomplishment every time you see your Guardian boosters in Outfitting.

If you enjoy spoilers, this is a good one

Also, the Sentienels been dumbed down a bit - you dont need to use the srv brakes anymore since FD removed the kinetic component from their energy attack.
Before, that component was quite annoying since it could push your srv around or even topple it.

Now, that is gone so... 2 pips in Sys and 4 in Wep and happily shoot them down. Try to avoid being shot by two sentinels - if that happens, 4 pips to Sys and move to cover.

Greetings commander,

My introduction to FSD booster was thanks a member of Nameless who became my Yoda teaching me the ways to get things done, quickly and efficiently.. First head to a guardian site and park fast enough away that your point defence will attack the pesky aliens that will try and prevent you from dying what your hoping to achieve. You need to raise six towers and shoot the glowing part, once all six are up you have a few minutes to deposit a piece of guardian relic on a patch of ground at the site that raises a big orb. Scan the orb and get the blue print. There are many guides and maps that can help, I found it very helpful to be guided through the process. Shooting the skimmers releases goodies and shooting panels on structures release goodies. I couldn't be without my FSD booster.. Have fun

Interesting - they were still knocking me over with their kinetic attack last week - so it was changed since then ...

Even more interesting... i've done the guardians on alt at the end of December, so before January patch, and their energy attacks were missing the kinetic component.
If you did it last week and they had it, it only means... well... ninja bug fixing.
Well, not even sure if it was acknowledged as a bug, but it certainly wasn't in the patch notes

Took me a while (as in multi-hour sessions over several days), buuuuut I wasn't using any outside tools or looking things up online. If you already know where everything is and how to solve every puzzle then yeah it shouldn't take long. I will mention that it's one of the few "quests" in the game where you ought to be able to figure everything out using in-game tools plus maybe a notepad and some trial-and-error, and it can be an interesting adventure to do it this way. Like, if all you care about is the FSD boosters then by all means power through it, but if the reason you've decided to try for them now is because you're bored and want something interesting to do, my suggestion would be go in blind and don't rush.

Might be a good idea to ensure you have some sulphur and phosphorus (SRV ammo/fuel synthesis) and/or a spare SRV (either a size 4 hangar or two size 2's).

There is a megaship ferry which heads out to Guardian space from Zende every Thursday morning (and another that jumps back to Zende).

In addition to the new outpost, there is an asteroid base at the Pencil Nebula which has outfitting (SRV available) and a shipyard.

Done this recently on my alt (30 hours playtime) in a Viper Mk4, took me about 3 hours or so - just pick a site that yields Guardian Module fragments and 'farm' all materials (you only need two types - it took me a single menu log which was the extent to which I had to grind - only for Guardian Technology components which are the rarest ingredient of the FSD booster recipe).

Ship wise, small ships are preferred because they allow you to land where you want. I do however not recommend the Cobra for this because of the placements of the utilities slots - underneath the ship as opposed to on top (like the Viper has), which means it can't shoot down the Sentinel missiles. Medium ships are fine also but some sites are located in a really hilly area which is a pain to land a large vessel in.

The DBX is a good ship because you can land it in the ideal spot. Watch the YouTube videos to see where to land it.

Just remember to make a list of all of the times you need to make the module... don't do what i did and fly back to find i was 6 short on Guardian Technology Components.

So I had to do the 1,542ly round trip just to pick them up (although - i took a slightly different route and did some scanning, to make it worth my while)

I recommend not doing it at night. The sites are confusing enough without them being dark as well. Unfortunately, it's a matter of luck what time of day it is when you get there.

i did mine in VR so had the SRV VR issues to deal with and night vision.. was pretty cool though..
