Realistically, is there a way to stealth/non-lethal through scavenging missions?

Based on what I've seen, it doesn't seem necessary to actually kill the enemies during a scavenging salvage mission. I haven't attempted them much, but it sounds like I just need to get in, get the thing, and then get out. I'm trying to play a non-lethal pilot and avoiding missions where murder is inevitable. That pretty much leaves me with courier, trade, mining, and passenger transport. I think that scavenging salvage, which would be fun, is theoretically possible, but I'm not sure how. The stealth mechanics in the game are really dodgy and I don't think I can rely on them to sneak around guards. I could try to get their attention (possibly in my ship/SRV) and lead them away from the scavenging salvage site, but figure they'll just go back to the site when they lose my trail. There isn't a non-lethal weapon to stun them or anything. Is there a way I haven't considered to get in and out of a site without confrontation?

You could try to land far away, close in discretely, throw a grenade to the right so that they go investigate that way, while you go the other way, circling around.

I'm more of a pewpewpew person, so I never really tried to avoid casualties. What I do from time to time, is fire at an explosive barrel to bring the NPCs there, then I pewpewpew...

If it's a recovery mission from a settlement you can get the base powered up before the scavs arrive. That stops any combat.
Crash site ones are trickier as the scavs can drop out of the sky at any moment, though if you're quick you might get what you want before they turn up. Have an SRV on hand for a quick getaway.

Kind of hard to stealth any of those small sites when they're festooned with scavs. 2 drops is usual, sometimes I've seen 3, sometimes none. Sometimes I'm fast enough to be leaving in my ship when they arrive.

There was a semi-recent thread about the real world game rating system that Elite would need to be given in order to have unconscious people - not because knocking people unconscious is 'worse' than killing them, but rather because you could knock them unconscious and then execute them while they are unable to defend themselves.

I did read that thread. That was pretty interesting. So, killing innocent people is rated E, but killing unconscious people (innocent or otherwise) crosses a line. 😁

I think the most realistic hope is that they refine the stealth/sneaking game. But, I doubt that is a high priority.

Non- lethal weapons are irrelevant to the stealth issue.

Either you can use a non lethal weapon to walk around and take down NPCs in full view of others (because of no bounties on non-lethal weapons) or you fix stealth in the first place by having kills where you aren't seen not generate bounties.

Stealth and non-lethal does get mixed up generally. One doesn't mean the other, and vice versa and all that. My stance will always be that stealth also doesn't mean no bounties as your suit is always snitching on you [1]. Stealth means low chaos with the surroundings being unaware what you do until it is too late, in my opinion. It is irellevant if it is lethal or non lethal.

[1] just wait for the day when you iPhone reports you for speeding. It will happen.

Lots of missions can be done stealth without violence. Stealing things etc. For RP i either zap people, or punch them out with a melee enhanced suit. :) It's a shame really that there is no option for non lethal force in the game..

unless the mission explicitly says that you have to kill, all odyssey missions can be done stealthily and without violence. it takes much longer and its much more difficult, but i find it to be great fun and cool challenge. my fav is nonviolent stealth shutdown of a settlement thats just one very large building. that one requires finesse...
for some more tips i summon stealthboy and end my turn face down

Another good one is trying to stealth any non-violent mission against a hostile settlement. That's always a giggle, although a strong recommendation is landing over 2km from the settlement and taking the SRV the rest of the way.
