Newcomer / Intro Really Noobish Exploration Question

Okay so I am clearly missing something.
I am currently in early stages of the 71-leg Rares circuit and I decided I would buy the advanced discovery scanner to have practice at how to do this stuff before I eventually get an Asp and head out into the Black.

But - I blast the ADS, get the horn and am told how many new objects are discovered.
But if I look in the nav panel all I see are a new list of x number of entries that all say "unexplored"
How do I tell which is star, planet (any more info on the planets?), asteroids etc etc?

When I have sold the data I see I am paid x for this and y for that but not sure I can see in the system what I have uncovered.

Thanks

You need to target each 'unexplored' one individually and fly to within x ls. You'll see 'Scanning' on the desciption, it takes a few seconds for each one.

If you select an object, you wlii see a hologram on the hud and see what it is, planet, asteroid belt, star. For more info you must scan that object.

Use the Navigation panel to lock onto an unexplored item. Then next to your radar there should be a holographic symbol showing you if it is a star, planet or asteroid belt if I remember correctly.

You then lock onto the planets and stars that are marked unexplored and travel towards them. When you get close enough it automatically triggers another scan and you will get the name etc... It is this closer scan that generates more data and therefore more money when you hand it - even more if you have the detailed surface scanner.

No point at the moment scanning asteroids unless you are looking for good places to mine.

You can't know for sure, but you can make good guesses. Have a look at the system view to get a look at the layout of the system. If you want to single out a planet to scan, for example, have a look at the semi-major axis. 1AU =~500 LS, so you can check the distance of your "unexplored" entries, and pick out the likely candidate. Eccentric orbits can throw this estimation off a bit, but that tends to only really be for stars.

Also, in your nav panel, you can look at how the entries are laid out- if a planet is orbiting a star, it will be inset, under that star. If said planet has a moon, it will be inset and under the planet, which itself will be inset from the star. I probably could have worded this better, but I'm rubbish.

Aha got you.
So the ADS just picked up every body in the sytem but you still need to get closer to get more info even without the DSS?

That is useful to know. I might just plot economical hops for the rares trade tour to give this more of a whirl.

I did find it odd that in some unexplored system the "illegal cargo" warning it up - I guess these might be stations and outposts not otherwise identified. Wish I had kept track of the systems I spotted it in!!

Yes the ADS just picks up targets for you to lock onto, get closer and scan - and of course because is is advanced it has a greater scan range than the basic one.

But it will scan without the DSS?

Yes it should do. My ships only have the basic discovery scanner, and when I get within a certain range of a planet it starts to scan so I slow down. By the way, you tend to have to get a bit closer to scan the moons of any planet.

That distance is based on the mass of the object. Stars you can scan from thousands(?) of LS away, gas giants hundreds, smaller planets and moons under 100LS.
