Really really disappointed

I was chilling with a glass of red whilst downloading Horizons, when I initially started just as it became available it was a 30 min download, then 21 days was the longest, it actually took 3.5 hours, that is with the missus updating the entire planet on facebook.

I would suggest this may have more to do with your service provider than Frontier, Frontier use Amazon cloudfront to distribute content, and this comprises numerous servers all around the world.

To date it has been flawless for me, the entire Horizons update took little more than 20 minutes here in the UK, and that was within minutes of it’s release when everyone was trying to download it. While others milage does vary, it has as much to do with the numerous servers between you and the content delivery service, as anything else. Further, it is the start of the Holiday period where average loads will be higher than normal across the entire internet, as folks sit at home accessing the many online services, and as such there is nothing Frontier can do about it.

Also fwiw “You pays your money, you takes your chance” is an English proverb

Correct me if I'm wrong but your complaining because you have to download and update things? am I being stupid?

I have a friend who used to play fine on 2mb BT broadband and others on various connections from standard broadband to fibre. I've only ever had poor downloads and speeds during big patches. I kicked off an install on my work laptop this morning from a work office and got 4mb a second and then finished at home and got 4mb again.

Only poor speed I had was during Horizons launch lowest 300K a sec at one point but the day after between 3mb and 6mb a second on home gaming PC.

I often have problems getting updates and think that not FD for but Amazon (Host).
Yes I think files should be made available in more can one place, a non-amazon place.

Surely someone could just upload their copy of the game files to a file hosting service, you download and plonk them in the Elite folder and I have thought the game would see if there are file differences and work/download updates?

I don't believe for a second this is a Frontier related problem because thousands of us all play the game and update it weekly. Where are you based, who is your provider and whats your connection speed upload and download?

Bit disingenious that. Loads of users report snail downloads despite having excellent internet service speeds.
FD's servers seem incapable of communication with some otherwise healthy access points.

You should report this. I've not had any problems with downloading on a 22Mbp/s and 66Mbp/s connections, both of which are Plusnet provided.

you could get a steam key, much faster in this respect.

Yes do this. Activate elite on steam and it'll just always be kept up to date in the background as long as you start steam with Windows.

Everytime there's a patch people are moaning and I'm just having a blast flying round the galaxy.

Within a couple of hours of release I downloaded the entire thing in about 15 minutes on my VM cable connection. I don't see how that'd be possible if Frontier's servers weren't up to the demand which must have been huge at that time.

any mmo company tunes their patch servers for average load, not spike load. download times will be slower on the day of a major release because gobs of people are downloading it simultaneously. that's just life.

It's been nearly a year since I got a chance to play and today I've finally got a day off work with no family commitments and want to have a go on horizons. The files have been syncing for 1.5 hours and have 3 hours to go so that's that: no Elite for me.

I was an early backer of this project and did play quite a bit at first but got increasingly :):):):):):) off with the constant need to update and the hopeless sync speeds. I've paid a lot of money for very little joy and feel very let down. I have several friends who have said the same, mixed reviews of the game play but all have given up due to the :):):):)-poor downloader / syncer.

The downloader needs abandoning and some decent bandwidth obtaining for straight non p2p nonsense downloading. I have neither the time nor the patience for this.

Updates should be that - why do we need to constantly re download the whole bloody thing for a few code tweaks

The game is locked down by having to log in why cant you release the major downloads and patches to mirror sites

I does not understand? Updates aren't that frequent and they dunt take very long on my internet. UK with 158smeg connection.

Download speeds have never made much sense to me, out here near Dubai I am using a wireless connection, download speed for the last update took a few minute's, the horizons download took 15 minutes.

My 50Mb Virgin fibre optic connection in London.. 6/7 hours if I am lucky.

Well, i wonder the same, because I'm on a slow connection 20/1 MB and my DL is very fast. max 1 hour for the complete DL.

I tried to connect to our company connection 1Gb and that was even worse, so its a mystery for me too.

You don't. The game updates only what it needs to update. You could see that with the minor update removing the version banner. The 64bit version being an exception because it's EXTRA. Having 32 and 64bit side by side is calling for trouble and upgrading the 32bit to 64bit would have excluded players from the game.

Because you are downloading from two different CDN regions. Europe has by far the most players and FD didn't rent enough bandwidth. That's why many in the EU had ridiculous download speeds on launch day while some other fellas in different regions sucked the entire package in a couple of minutes.

I'm not entirely familiar with how Amazon splits it. But London and Dubai are certainly not in the same region. Dunno if Europe is a region or if that's split as well.

From what I can tell, moving your game to Steam would fix these issues. I had the same problems. Steam's platform infinitely improves the download times and automatically keeps games up to date.

I can't speak for FD releasing updates as large as the full game (I have no idea if the do this or not). Regardless, the better speeds Steam offers would likely offset this a bit. I'm consistently at 4MB/sec or more, and I'm far from having the best internet connection.

Precisely, I can drive faster on a one lane road in the middle of nowhere whereas I'm stuck going 5 mph on an 8 lane freeway in the city, it's where the traffic is, and it gets to the point that no matter how much resource they try to allocate to the hotspots, it just gets too hot.

This will depend, it took me 5 minutes to download it from Frontier and over half an hour to download it from steam (neither of which are bad, but Frontier's was significantly faster), but it will depend for steam just like it does for Frontier: where you are, what the traffic is like.

I just set mine to download before I went to work, it was done when I got home. Another option would be to set it to download while you were sleeping, there's creative ways around stuff.

yeah Downloads speed are strange, I have heard of people on very fast connections taking ages to upgrade stuff, but me on just 38Mbit took only a few mins to upgrade to Horizon, although I am NOT complaining lol ;)
