Rear view mirror

You do not need a rear view mirror to drive your car either. It is however a useful tool and is nice to have. It would only make sense for all ships to have it as standard considering how trigger happy the Elite universe is.
But ED is 3D, so to this end we need something far more comprehensive. We should have some kind of thing that can show us the position of all the other ships in a large sphere around us.

oh wait...

Oh hey, what do you call things along the edges of the Cockpit in the F-18?

Clearly they are useless and just there for the pilot to admire how cool he looks, right?

The interesting thing is that actually we have in Elite some GUI elements which could be used for creating the functionality I'm suggesting. When we're docking, there is sort of a simplified view of the landing pad, when we are landing on a planet there is a simplified view of the landscape below on the radar, when we are scooping cargo, there is a view showing one selected canister.
What I would love Frontier to do is to get this a bit more streamlined, leave the radar panel as a radar and create a semi-transparent (with opacity regulated through settings) display projected on the canopy. So the player can look at what's outside of the canopy and at the same time see what's around the ship. Since we already have (sort of) views below (planetary landing & landing pads) and in front (cargo scooping, although not exactly), these could be used, improved with more details and additional views of what's to each side of the ship and behind it. These ships are capable of moving into every possible direction and I think it would be good if the game reflected that possibility and helped players to use it better and in more situations.

Oh! I know exactly what you're talking about, I saw them the last time I was in an F-18. Hey, did you notice them on the sides of your sidewinder?

In all seriousness an F18 pilot doesn't really do the same things a sidewinder pilot does.
