Hardware & Technical Reasonable upgrade for GPU

Hi Folks,

currently I run ED on a AMD/ATI HD5850 (CPU 3570K, 16GB RAM, SSD, 480W power supply). I'd like to have it a little bit less laggy, especially at higher quality settings. So I'm thinking of buying a new gpu.

What are the mininum specs for running ED on a single 1080p screen with max details at a minimum of 60 fps? Which graphics card would you recommend?

Thanks a lot

Some one will come along that really knows their stuff soon, but I´m well happy with my GTX 660, think it cost about 130 quid, runs 3 screens. ED selects ultra settings for me on start up, I´m happy. Think you´ll need to upgrade your power supply aswell , but I´m really no expert.

i have the MSI Radeon R9 270X i got it for 139.99 and i hold around 60FPS maybe 55 - 50 near a plant with an asteroid belt but so far it is flawless. You will need to get a higher power supply as it needs 500W+ and i got a few more fans to keep her cool.

The Nvidia 960 probably isn't too far away. It'll run ED at a more than fair level and it will probably use slightly less power than your current card so should avoid a PSU upgrade. Obviously check that once it's available.

I went for a Radeon R280, spotted it for £130 on Amazon so bit of a bargain. AMD are currently replacing them with the R285 so if you keep your eyes peeled there are definitely deals to go for...

I'll second the 270x (think mine is an Asus DirectCuII Top or something like that). My CPU is an old AthlonII X4 640 and this card manages to give me great performance even with the antiquated chunk of silicon beating at the heart of my PC.

The GTX750 or 750Ti would be the card to go for on a budget i'd say. They're low power (<60W) so you get some that don't need any extra PCI-E connectors and they're about £100. Being low power and low heat they also overclock really well, if this is something you did want to do then you should go for one with the aforementioned PCI-E socket. Given that they're not all that expensive if you ever decide you do want to go all out on a GPU it will make a very good card for a secondary machine or HTPC as they're cool and quiet.

Performance wise, they're about on par with the GTX480.

Hi all,

thanks for your input. I think I'll go either for a 750ti or maybe better a R9 270. This should suffice for max details at 1080p ...

I never actually read your first post properly! The 750Ti is a great card but might not be much of an upgrade for you... let me try it on my HTPC with a 750Ti for you and I'll report back... probably tomorrow

The GTX970 will run on that PSU without issues. Most AMD cards (on the higher end) will require a PSU upgrade. In the end, it all depends on your budget.
