Recommended Mining Ships

Why do you hate it though? If its due to the small lasers than if it were me I'd try a cobra like this.. (6-bin refinery, 3 collectors, and 2 med. lasers) I always mine shield-less personally. I drop into a random spot on the rings, stay away from RES sites, wait for a NPC scan that always happens right away, and then I'm left alone for hours afterwards with no trouble. I also sell at a station in the same system. (Thome Gateway - HIP 16607). But to be honest, at that price point I'd stick to the T6 due to the extra cargo.

While I agree with you post I think OP should be warned about mining shieldless. If for whatever reason you get disconnected, be it a crash or that you just need to log out, when you log back in NPCs will spawn at your instance if it's an inhabited system. Sometimes they are police but sometimes they are pirates. If you are caught inside the ring mass lock area in a slow, shieldedless ship, you are pretty much dead if a wing of pirates spawn.

I recommend giving the T-6 a go.
Not a lot of love for them, but I found them really useful.

I ended up with two skin packs and still have it A rated and mil spec, although my current in-use fleet is Asp Python Vulture.

Trouble with the T6 is that it's only got 2 hardpoints so if you fit dual mining lasers, you leave it with absolutely NO defenses at all.

You can cram an almost identical mining setup into a Keelback and at least that gives you a couple of extra medium hardpoints for defensive weapons.
Course, if the OP isn't keen on the T6, he's probably not gonna like the Keelback either.

Currently using a Federal Dropship. Took me ages to get the rank for it, but it's nicely set up internally to have prospector, 4x collector limpets active at once, the ability to sustain fire with 2x medium mining lasers until the asteroid you're interested in is drained, class-4 refinery without wasting space in a larger bay, decent shield with 4 boosters, and 96 cargo space (which is decent for back-and-forth runs if you've got a good base of operations).

Honestly, if you are in a T-6, even with both hardpoints with actual weapons, you're better off running! I think even mines wouldn't help much. That said, you don't need weapons to mine in a T-6: chaff and point defense and 4A thrusters. I've gotten 24T of painite from one asteroid in the middle of a HAZ RES. You usually have to leave after your first good asteroid, though.

Try this Diamondback Explorer

It's tough enough to survive being shieldless for a little while.

edit. When 2.3 comes out soon, the Dolphin might be a good budget mining ship. Much more fun than a T6 anyway.

I think I mocked up that same Dolphin build a couple days ago! :D The Asp Scout (with the upcoming buff) would do nicely too, for a similar price. The main issue with all smaller mining ships is: you're limited to about 48-32T cargo capacity. The exception is the T-6, but it's limited to slower mining because 2 small mining lasers = 1 medium mining laser.
