Recommended specs

Your current dual core cpu might be the problem since as you mention they do recommend a quad core. Michael has said that once the game is optimised they are hoping the suggested specs come down a bit so once this takes place it might be ok so no need to do any damage to your bank account just yet I think ;)

There's people playing it on older gen dual core processors just fine, but with better gfx cards.

You know nothing, John Snow.

Just like many ignorant people out there think that 30 fps is silky smooth like TV and so on, I thought 60 was the best on TFT, and 85 which marks the line where I can no longer tell higher refresh rates on CRT; and nobody would ever need or want more.

Then I played DIRT 3 on a 120 Hz screen at 120 fps. It's definitely not a twitch game either. It made a huge, huge difference. And in other games as well. Even if my rig cannot give me 120 fps straight, the difference is always noticeable.

I never want to go back.

Google FPS comparison.
Did you read the comment it was in answer too? It was the blanket statement of "More frames per second is a huge advantage tbh."

Maybe 120fps is noticeable over 60, but does it give a "huge advantage"? Does 200fps give a huge advantage over 120?

In short, if someone says playing Elite at 100fps gives a "huge advantage" over someone playing at 50fps, I'd have to question it. I doubt it really give a real advantage, especially if the person running at 50fps simply has a better controller, bigger monitor or track IR etc. And a "huge advantage"? Come on! Let's keep realistic about it!
