Redoing the Arid Animal Pack

  • Dromedary Camel: not a big fan of it, but I definitley can understand why it was included
  • African Crested Porcupine: nothing I would change.
  • Black Rhinoceros probably took quite some time, so this spot probably should have gone to the Hamadryas baboon
  • Addax: Collared/Chaco peccary wouldn't need a lot of new animations and represent a continent which still needs more
  • Dama Gazelle: definitely an underdog, which nobody was expecting, but can do some great work. I really hope that someday they will put in the three different subspecies in a free update or something
  • Somali Wild Ass: Radiated tortoise
  • Sand Cat: probably too much effort, as a new rig would be needed, but I belive that the Greater bilby would probably take a very similar spot, being small, cute, nocturnal and also very endangered and unknown outside of Australia
  • Exhibit: Desert Horned Viper: Veiled chamaleon, not my preference for chamaleon species, but kind of fits the theme.

Did you see the trailer? Addax will be there. See those curly antelope-horns? Already happening.

This is quite difficult. None of the animals in the pack are bad choices but, as everyone else has said, they are all African species, essentially making this the African Pack #2. Trying to pick species to replace is kind of difficult but, I think I'd go with these:

  • Dromedary Camel stays. I nearly removed it, but I thought that as we've not had another camel since the game came out, this is fine.
  • Black Rhinoceros is out. We've already got two, and with a limited roster I think we need it for something else. Something unique like the Greater Roadrunner. It might not be the largest bird, but it adds some variety.
  • Addax is out. We've got a few African antelope, so we need a bit of variety. Blackbuck is an obvious choice.
  • Dama Gazelle can stay. There aren't many gazelles in the game, so it isn't a problem.
  • African Crested Porcupine is out. But, a porcupine is a really nice choice so we'll swap in the Indian Crested Porcupine.
  • Somali Wild Ass can stay. I do have a soft spot for this species, so I don't mind it staying. But, we could swap it out for a subspecies of Asiatic Wild Ass.
  • Sand Cat is out. Not another felid, we have too many. The Persian Honey Badger would be a much better option.
  • Desert Horned Viper is out. Whilst it would be a shame to remove a new snake from the game, I think many were disappointed that the Frilled Lizard didn't make it into the Australia Pack. So, I'd add it here.

As I said, there's nothing wrong with any of the animals in this DLC. But, I think some of them should've been worked into other or future packs, and replaced by other species to make this not another African pack.

I did and it seems to be well done. But this doesn't mean that I think it should have been put in this pack, it's more of a wishful thinking rather than what we're getting.

Didn't/Haven't you seen other previous dlc packs being changed after the planet zoo.com news showed what animals will come?

We're not trying to make them change anything. Just giving opinions on how we would've done it. There's actually an entire thread on 'how you would've done each DLC' or something.

Although I've been critical of this pack, I wouldn't make many changes knowing the current roster. I'd probably change the name to Deserts (while I'm even getting more sold on Drylands) and take out:
  • Black Rhinoceros
  • Dama Gazelle
  • Horned Viper
I'd replace them with:
  • Hamadryas Baboon
  • Collared Peccary
  • Thorny Devil
Minor changes, still and Africa-dominated pack with only one less ungulate and still a 'regular exhibit' species, but for me this would uplift the DLC to the same level as our earlier biome animal packs.

Fair enough. I'm no taxonomist. I saw some records online where they listed both Frilled Lizard and Lace Monitor as inhabiting "arid and semi-arid regions", but I personally don't know. I almost wrote Perentie instead, but I like Lace Monitors better :)
Can't blame you. Internet is full of false information. But in this case it is actually correct. Semi-Arid includes Grasslands and Savannahs too, so it is a broader term than Semi-Desert. In our case we need Animals that are "Arid enough" to get Desert tags in the game. The least would be Semi-Desert in this context.

not Arid

  • Dromedary Camel
  • African Crested Porcupine
  • Black Rhinoceros
  • Addax
  • Dama Gazelle Hamadryas baboon
  • Somali Wild Ass
  • Sand Cat Collared Peccary
  • Exhibit: Desert Horned Viper
Takes this from a mid pack to a great pack imo.

Changing the name to "Sahara" or "African deserts" and swapping in the hamadryas baboon for either addax or dama gazelle would already go such a long way for me.
Prob would also swap the horned viper for morrocan or ornate uromastyx since there are so little tank lizards and we already have a desert viper from africa. Ofc this is in case this HAS to be a standard exhibit, otherwise i would have prefered a bird in th WE

Recognizing that a lot of the work went into the porcupine, I get why they went with a lower-effort exhibit species, but I was really hoping for and banking on leopard geckos for a desert pack's exhibit.

Personally, the one thing I would have thought would a) make the pack a lot better and b) be an easy animal to make is the African spurred tortoise, as a replacement for one of the antelopes. I am sure I could think of another couple of different animals, but that is the one species change I would have liked to see.

For me it would be:
1. Dromedary
2. African Crested Porcupine
3. Hamadryas Baboon
4. Secretary Bird
5. Collared Peccary
6. Patagonian Mara
7. Dwarf Mongoose
8. Frilled Lizard

Was shapes and patterns of tortoises' shell easy to make?

I would keep:
  • Dromedary Camel
  • Black Rhinoceros
  • Sand Cat
  • Addax
  • African Crested Porcupine
  • Somali Wild Ass

I would change:
  • Dama Gazelle with Collared Peccary
  • Desert Horned Viper with Thorny Devil
