Really? Then how about the USA where you, in practice, can't be elected unless you endorse the Christian god? What about the Christian fundamentalists who work to effect policy. What about the Vatican and its de facto power over millions of catholics? Religion has no power?
Calm down. This isn't some youtube comments section beneath a "Richard Dawkins pwns religious dude" video. It's a forum about a computer game where you pretend to be a spaceman. In this game, religion currently has very little presence, but I think the idea of including religious affiliations in the mix when generating the lore and content in the game has merit, and am musing upon the subject, trying to come up with a simplified, generalised rule set that could cover a wide majority of situations in a fashion that would appear to make sense. You may have a different agenda for this thread, but I would argue that it's off topic in this forum.
Freedom is relative within any society, and inequality will exist in some form. Those with more freedom will use any explanation to justify that advantage to themselves, and to maintain that advantage over others. The powerless get deities to watch over them, and the powerful get to be those deities (or at least speak for them). Sounds accurate enough to me.
