While scanning planets in the FSS-mode, the number of surface features is meaningless, either there are the types Cmdrs are looking for there or they are not. Revealing the actual number and location of these POIs should be the job of the DSS alone.
A more involved alternative would be to obfuscate the type too and only show a spectrum indicating the type of surface features similar to the frequency bar and a high number of occurences could be indicated as well if that information is in any way relevant.
Experienced explorers would be able to recognise the patterns as fast as reading their name, others would know if there is a more or less valuable surface feature on the planet.
The downside is obviously that information would be obscured from the players (again) and something different would be expected to be made in their favour.
