Elite / Frontier Renaming the FFE universe...

Has anyone ever heard of the game Noctis? It's a space game with a randomly generated universe like FFE but the main focus is just exploring and naming systems and planets as you go and then you send your data to the author and everyone's data gets merged every so often.

Now, it is possible with FFE as well, but what do you guys think? Is this something that interests you? Because I could implement this into BUFFET 3.0 and everyone could send their data file with naming information to me and I would merge it into one file, downloadable to everyone.

Of course there would be rules to the naming of systems and planets:

1. Only the randomly generated names could be replaced.

2. No offensive words.

3. It will work on a first come, first served basis, so if two or more people send in naming data for the same system, the first one received will be used.

I'd appreciate some thoughts on this.

I remember the song of U2 "Where the streets have no name."
In a small vilage you have a few streets to name. And plenty options.
In a world city of many milions you got a whole lotta streets.
Wenn checkin out stars in a galacy and name every planet many gamers can find. The pool for names aren't that big.
There is a code name convention that would be used in stead. Like they do now in a hybrid way.

It will work in the start wenn pool of names is mostly unused. After some play time, then most of it is used. Then it get difficult or get farfetched names.
Naming stars and exasolar planets is a Astrophysisist thing, wich get very hairy in time.

Things to name are player owned : ships, bases, planets, moon's.

It's just an idea, I've not done it yet, and I'm not saying we should name every star, it could just be a bit of fun.

@Spacegamer: I don't think I could add that to the planetary data page, but I could add the option to BUFFET to write sentences about the current system.

Sounds good, but wouldn't it mess up the non-scripted missions which often involve travelling to the randomly-named systems? (eg. Federal military missions)

That's a good point Steve, but if this problem could be sidestepped, then yes why not. I have a ton of systems written down (many on the extreme rim of the galaxy) from when I was exploring. One thing though, priority should be given to systems with Earth type planets or those which are special in some other way. Also if there might be a conflict with random missions, perhaps we should set an exclusion zone around the inhabited core, say 650 LY? I will have to double check my systems though to make sure they are still there in FFE as I used Elite 2 way back then.

It wouldn't mess anything up, but if you took a mission that required you to go to a system you ranamed, like Steve said, it would still be okay only the mission would have the 'real' name of the system.

The method I had in mind, is when you enter a system that has been renamed, BUFFET looks at the database of renamed systems and renames the the stars and planets if required.

Sadly, the process which generates the Frontier galaxy seems to have changed between FE2 and FFE. For example: Arhoqu (766,-39) has starports etc. in FE2 but just comes up as "unexplored system" in FFE. You can still go there but there ain't much to see. I doubt whether Buffet could do anything about that; the FFE code would have to be re-written, I suspect :(

Would the navigation map show the new names or the old ones?

What if we created new starports? :D

New names.

i'm indifferent about this for fe2 or ffe but it would be fantastic for elite 4,whoever gets to the unexplored system first names it,the name gets sent to frontiers network and then whenever everyone else plays the game that name is updated so every single person who plays the game has the same names.u can all come n visit my system that'd be cool!just imagene how impressed wifes/husbands/kids would be when u said look! i name the system in that game! : )
