Replacement HOTAS - X56 vs Warthog

My X52 had an indent at 50%.
25% and 75% sounds weird though.

It's bloody annoying. I want to be able to keep track of when my throttle is set to 0 using full range throttle. Instead on the x52 the detents are felt when the throttle it just above the blue zone for forward thrust, and just below the blue zone for reverse thrust. Absolute pain in the jerrycan.

Actually just want to make sure it's tough enough. Smooth is good, but I don't want to give it a light tug and my nose launches straight up.

But...you can edit the I/O curves? Yup, that's me sold.

Too light? If your ship turns, you want it to... if your weapons fire, you mean to destroy something and the same goes for the switches.

It was mentioned here, that the 8-way POV hats on stick and throttle are moving a bit swampy, but that is with intention. Usually they are used to control your heads movement with it, so they fluidly move between two positions. You can use them as 8 separate buttons though. I have all menues and both maps mapped to the throttle hat, while the one on the stick does everything concerning wingmen and some targeting. In the past 2 weeks i have never switched something on or off, i did not want to.

At first i was a bit disappointed, that not all buttons give you a decent click sound, but when you use them, you know, that the buttons are like they should be, including the silent ones. Besides that, you will actually need to apply force to switch the flip switches on the throttle... no accidental switching possible. Yes, i really love this piece of hardware.

Nice one, thanks dude.

Does the idle detent match up with 0% throttle correctly for full-range throttle in ED?

When I said too light, it's because atm my stick also feels like there isn't enough resistance. I am not often looking at it, and if I need to make a semi-precise movement for rail guns etc. I often end up over-pulling because it's so light I don't realise how far it's moved. Doesn't help in conjunction with the small deadzone.

Rep for the assistance (y)

Youre welcome :)

The marked idle position of the throttle handle matches with the idle position of Elites full range throttle setting. And to make it even easier, the zero position is reached, when the handle is exactly vertical. I use a light deadzone there, to counter unintentional inputs during combat. The motion range of the handle is a lot shorter towards reverse than the range for forward throttle, but regardless it allows precise backward thrust. The throttle unit recognizes 16.000+ positions on its full range, allowing you to really fine tune thrust, if needed. There is a little modification you can do (which is part of the features of the HOTAS) to block part of the forward throttle range. To go beyond that block you have to lift the throttle handle - the documentation says, that this setting is used for afterburners on jetfighters. I left it as it came out of the box. You can also adjust the resistance of the throttle levers from almost loose to pretty stiff, using a wheel on the controller.

And prepare some tea or coffee before starting the configuration. If you want to do it properly it takes some hours. You can create button sequences, macros and other things with the T.A.R.G.E.T software, that can be downloaded from the Thrustmaster page. Buttons can be told to fire an impulse, hold the key or fire a sequence of keys. In the advanced setting you can also create scripts and macros for each button, even control the LEDs when flipping switches... personally i went with the standard configuration method, assigning one function to each button state.

As most buttons actually stay in the position you switch them too, you have to make sure, that they are in off position, when hitting the launch button after initially launching the game... or you ship does the swiss army knife on launch.

I setup the throttle to be just forward, so 0 on the stick is 0 throttle, 100 is 100. But that obviously leaves the problem of going backwards. The pinky button, big black metal heavy feeling button (which is awesome I might add) I have configured to reverse the throttle. This is awesome if you are going 100% throttle and suddenly need to reverse, just press the pinky down and boom 100% reverse thrust without moving the throttle at all. This is great when you are matching speed and things of that nature, if you just need to slow down for a second but want to keep your current throttle value, just press the pinky until you slow down and release, and you are all set. I love it.

I went with that setting when with my X55, but strangely i changed that immediately, when i got my WH. Did a handful of training Cobra face-offs and came to the conclusion, that i get more accurate control out of that setting. I have mapped the up and down thrusters to the second lever of the throttle. Analog thrusters really make a difference when you want to keep your enemy in sights...

Hey all, while reading up on the incoming Hog last night, I read that the throttle has a detent that is "kind of" adjustable, but I can't find a clear answer on whether or not I can set the detent at the 50% position? I prefer flying with full-range throttle now rather than using a button to toggle.

I saw it asked a few times: the reason I went with the super-stick rather than another X-52 is that I do play some other flight games (IL2-1946, a little DCS) and I want the superior control that an expensive device provides. The X52 I feel was a great starter point and it served me well, but now it's time for something bigger, better and fancier.

Also: the thrusters in Elite...are they analogue or digital? The throttle hat on the X-52 was digital (off/on), I have a lot of option on the hog that are analogue, so I'm wondering if the game recognizes thrusters in more than an off/on fashion.

Many a thank-a-you. Very good chunk of info, and in effect, I am going to order one now.

Appreciate the effort; shame I can't rep you moar.

I really hope, you like it as much as i do. Check different shops! There is a large price range... In Europe you can buy it for 500,- € or 299,- as lowest price... I went with Amazon, where it is sold for 330,-. While the stick is awesome, you dont need to pay more than necessary.

The optional (included) hardware detent is for the afterburner only, as far as i know, but the throttle idles, when the handle is completely vertical (and at the lit idle mark).

Right, here's hoping I can pop it open and make a little adjustment or remove it then.
