Request/Idea: Fixed Weapon Convergence?

I've been playing with more fixed weapons lately, even though gimballed usually ends up being more effective (primarily play PVE). I'm enjoying working a little harder for my kills. :)

That said, I think fixed weapons could use a little boost. I'm liking the slightly increased damage, but I think they're missing one huge feature: Weapon Convergence.

At a minimum, I'd like to see us being able to configure how far out our weapons converge in outfitting. WWII fighters did this, and see no reason why we wouldn't do the same. I laugh every time I see a clipper try to shoot me with fixed weapon mounts on the outer wing while directly facing me. :)

Alternatively, a feature to auto-converge based on the distance to the target would be neat too. I know the weapons already do this to a very small extent (.1 degree maybe), but think they ought to do a little more. Perhaps how well they converge could depend on how solid of a lock we have (similar to how low heat signature targets reduce the allowable fire arc of gimballed weapons), and perhaps also become ineffective when the target launches chaff.

With something like this, I think this would help boost fixed weapons and increase their usage.

Good idea, but I don't think it should be autoconverge, as that would eliminate the difference between different hardpoint placements. The convergence distance should be set, perhaps independently for each weapon, so that say you could set a shorter convergence for a "short range blaster" engineers weapon but a longer convergence for "long range" engineered weapons.

Requiring the convergence distance to be set improves widely spaced hardpoints but still doesn't make them as good as ones close together. For example, consider setting the convergence distance of a Clipper's weapons at 1.5km. Under 1km they become difficult to use, and similarly over 2km they start to spread out again. So the widely spread hardpoints are still difficult to use for fixed weapons, but at least they're not impossible. This increases gameplay options and encourages fixed weapon usage.

Bumping this up given the new tweaks coming to help encourage use of fixed. Please FDev, I think this will help immensely with adoption of fixed!

Agreed.

The ability to set the convergence to center while in outfitting in 100m increments starting at say 500m would be a welcome addition to fixed weapons.

Over 1300 years in since WW2 and people are still talking about using WW2 methods of fixed convergence. We would have computers to do it automatically for us.

After getting an iCourier: yes, this should definitely be an option. At the very least something like near/mid/far. While I love dogfighting in the IC, the tip guns are a bit too wide for my taste. I can take down a Conda in 30-90 secs, but a Viper takes five minutes. Five FUN minutes, mind you, but still five minutes.

Good idea, +1. Altough

this. Autoconvergence should really be there too. Up to the user to set it auto/manual for me.

Yeah I just made a post on this 3 hours ago literally asking the same question, you even rehashed my statement... creative.

Yes I agree it is a bit of a problem. I would Love to be able to focus fire to a point. but auto convergence sounds a bit too easy and no different to gimballed weapons. setting a fixed value however would still incorporate the skill required whilst also meeting the requirement to the players fighting style.
