[REQUEST] Navigation lights on ships when landing gear down [v3]

My second request from over a year and a half ago has been closed. And that was posted after my original request from over two years before that was closed. So I'm re-posting it again, nigh on three and a half years on...

How about when you get close to the station, navigation lights come into effect on your craft? As employed on ships/planes etc...

It would:-
  1. Be a bit more immersive.
  2. Might mean not crashing headlong into another ship you couldn't see very well in the poor lighting conditions.
I suggest a new option in the Status Panel controls the navigation lights:-
  • No Fire Zone - When in no fire zone, navigation lights are on.[default]
  • Landing Gear - When landing gear down, navigation lights are on.
  • On - Always on. [Purely for messing about...]
  • Off - Navigation lights never on.

Note 1: NPCs would be set to "No Fire Zone".

Note 2: Silent Running would prevent the lights coming on.

Note 3: Alternatively, "On" and "Off" could just be replaced/augmented with "Manual" and a key bind assignment offered to allow complete manual control of navigation lights. This bind should have a hold/toggle option on it.

I want this so much. It is only a LITTLE work to do for FD. If they do the Lighting rework in Q4 they could consider working on this.
If you look at the GIF in the OP you can see the giant effect this little ditails with this little work needed has.

Nice idea. I can't see any reason NOT to have this. Have some rep.

This is not a thing were we discuss if it is good or not. It is just an discussion about WHY THE HELL this isnt in the game allready???

three years, well we survived without that.. why the hell is not in the game yet, I do not know other things to do maybe, the idea remains very good though.

but maybe I would not allow it to be deactivatable, suicidal ones would be easier to notice, after all the idea is to avoid collisions.

After all this idea is there to create a more realistic and diverse lighting effects on the spaceships. If you look at any ship you will notice that there is no lights anywere. Which illuminates the own ship well.

Sorry guys. Our power plants can only do so much and an extra light bulb would render the ship inoperative. Perhaps a small LED... Nah, sorry.

;)

+1 for this request. Love the idea. If you do implement, can you take a look at extending the power of the main lights too....

Yes. Just, yes. The GIF in the OP is so much better than what we currently have in-game. Why isn't this part of the game already?

I'll add a +1 to that idea! I seem to recall that Frontier had nav lights active on landing and take off, or at least the port and starboard lights. It was actually a handy way of orientation if flying from an external view perspective. This would look very cool on the Elite Dangerous ships, and certainly help in high-traffic port areas.

+1 for this request and better control of ship lighting generally. I’d like the ships to go properly dark in silent running mode.

Given there are already a lot of lights on the ships (Check out the Python below...) I wonder if aircraft collision avoidance lighting from current 2018 technology fits with the futuristic immersion of 'Elite Dangerous' with all the combat. This is not a game where a Boeing airliner is looking to avoid a Cessna on approach. A player has several ways to tell whether another ship is approaching or moving away from their ship. That is the brilliance of ED as in flying an aircraft one has to constantly cycle through the six basic instruments. A player needs to get into a similar rhythm with all the information available on the console and the side panels. That more than lighting makes for a great ED pilot.

Also players have different scenarios. I use a two position switch on my Saitek X-56 throttle controller. Forward toggles the external lights. Backward toggles the Cargo Scoop. Very nice for lighting up materials and cargo cannisters! Just one way of many different ways to use the lights. These have to be considered when coming up with more detailed controls with the lighting.

Add in every ship in the game would need modifications to add red, green, strobes and rotating lighting to implement this suggestion. Yes the suggestion is pretty but does it fit the game? Will it make you a better ED pilot or if new to the game another easy target? Just some ideas to consider.
