Request to unlock the Cobra mk4

It was an exclusive. I've quoted the text from the store here.

If you need more proof, read the Horizons announcement post from David Braben: https://community.elitedangerous.com/node/247

It was a thank-you to existing season 1 owners who pre-ordered horizons.
originally it was for anybody who owned ED and then upgraded to ED Horizons whenever they wanted to, FD then went back on what they said and changed it to a timed exclusive after they changed the pricing model for ED Horizons. not going to argue with you about it, thats how it was.

Well since I don't consider the Cobra MK IV a ship but rather a giant paperweight with guns on it, I'd rather not have the thing be exclusive. FD might actually buff it if everyone could fly it.

That said, not gonna happen. Shame I can't give my right to fly it away to some poor soul that might like it. Cause I sure don't.

I don't know. I think it might be a really tanky and fun stealth ship.

This thread has made me decide to go purchase one. I will do that exact build or some incarnation of it and fly it exclusively for PvP to see if it really is as bad as people think.

Oh.. and to answer the question..

No for now..

Exclusive is exclusive

If anything make it a pay to play ship.

One more utility slot might really make it something.

I admit the cobra mk4 was a motivation for me to pre-order horizons. I had a play around with it and it's a fun ship in many regards. I do feel now that we have had our exclusive time with the Co4, and I'd like it to be shared with everyone.

As the game matures, I'd hate to see a classic ship like this fade out of the game altogether because new players can't attain it. I'd love to know if other horizons pre-orderers would be upset if the Co4 was released to the general population?
The moment you get horizon is the moment you have cobra mk4.....it is that simply, it is simply a horizon exclusive ship, at least that's how i read it, and it is not really a great ship to be honest, so eh, no worries really at least in my book.

Honestly the mk4 is so underwhelming that nobody would care if a fault was discovered causing them to all be retired.

Then bring out the mk5 with the speed of the mk3 and the hardpoints of the mk4.

Since it was marketed as an exclusive, it should remain that way. I don't like the ship personally. I bought one and flew it, turned around and sold it. If they're going to make it available to everyone, then I'd be happy if they compensated those of us who originally qualified with something like an exclusive paint job for our choice if ship. Something besides black, since we already have that too. :)

Lol. The only thing that makes the Cobra Mk III fun to fly is its history as "The" ship from the original Elite. Aside from that its not particularly a great ship.
It's the best general-purpose small ship and the fastest ship in the game. I'd rather fly a Mk III than an Asp Explorer any day, especially in the Bubble. I haven't found any particularly compelling use for the Mk IV. Speed is what makes the Mk III stand out.

WRT the OP: sure, I've no objection to the IV being open to all. I don't like seeing things fenced off. Maybe later, though; give it a decent period of exclusivity.

Ditto I'm waaaaaay happier in my Cobra in the bubble. You can even cope with the nutter attacks and get away without being ruined. Outside in the wild the extra legroom is much appreciated but the Asp feels positively lumbering by comparison

The cobra mk iv is rubbish.. I dont care

however I would have liked it to have been a regular ship available to all because I think it was made rubbish on purpose because its exclusive, so it would have been a ship worth flying rather than the geneticaly flawed big brother of a legendary ship.

Hopefully there is a mk5 in the works that is the ship the mk4 should have been and every one will get it.

Honestly I would rather fly a keelback!

No. We allready have to many ships in the middle bracket competing with each other. Another clone is the last thing i want to see and i dont think i am the only one here. I agree with the people that say the exclusivity deals are bad. What i would like to see is more high tier ships (competition for the python) and true upgrades for the Trinity ships at the Top ('Conda, Corvette, Cutter).

I know what you mean. But redundance would be the only real way ouf of this.

Also, while in terms of "game mechanics" similar ships indeed are unnecessary, it makes sense that they do exist. I mean, why are the Audi A3, Ford Focus, Honda Civic, Renault Mégane, Toyota Auris and many other similar models on the market? After all, there's the VW Golf, so all the others are not necessary? (Or pick any other random one of them and consider them the only one needed and the rest being unnecessary. )

The only point speaking against this is: the creation of a ship costs development ressources. Depending on how the team is set up, this might be a significant factor, or it might be a way to keep a designer busy at a lush of other development activities. I don't know enough about Frontier to determine that, but if designers are indeed busy enough on other stuff (which i very much hope), then this is the very only real reason against redundancy: development time should better be invested in other aspects of the game.

Firstly - I have to say no. A ship provided as an exclusive option should remain so. Whether those who have access to it choose to use that purchase option is down to them.

Cobra IV is Rubbish? I don't think so. Like most ships in the game it has things it does well and I've had lots of fun hours flying one. It's a good planet lander and carries a good payload along with SRV's. It can and does bite against normal NPC's. It also provides that element of excitement when you come up against a better pilot - choosing whether to fight or run is important in the Cobra IV. If you don't want to have to make that sort of choice then I guess the Cobra IV is not for you! Too many pilots bin a ship (not just the Cobra IV) without really trying out its abilities.

At the moment i have problems finding a good job for this ship. It can be a useful tanker. It is a not too bad grould assault ship. But at the moment that's all i personally can come up with. But it doesn't need to stay that way. We've seen several changes in balance by now, which resulted in ships which previously were considered to be worthless suddenly see use. I hope that some future changes will also push the Cobra MK IV into the rooster of ships which are considered good. (Mind you, not every ship can be the -best-, good and useful suffices. :) )

I get the point made by many that it was given as an exclusive, I think it played a part in me buying when I did. I wouldn't mind if it were made available to everyone at the end the season though. For me it has been a little bit disappointing, because it doesn't FEEL like an improvement on the MkIII.

The Cobra MK IV is not useless, it makes a better miner than the original. I also prefer it to the Viper IV as an inexpensive bounty hunter, without shields and packed with HRP etc its fun in a CZ, but I can see it could be a frustrating ship for the inexperienced cmdr.

Who knows, maybe the engineers will enable it to really shine but I cant see it ever being the diamond that the classic cobra is.

The overwhelming theme in this thread seems to be 'please no more exclusive ships'. It really sounds like FDev made a mistake on this, so maybe the answer is to communicate that, explain the situation and swap exclusivity for some nice skins or similar?

The Black Friday paint was also a pre-order bonus. You should have access to both.

If they open up one, that opens a can of worms on people wanting them to unlock everything else.

I believe I pre-ordered in early December. I was futzing around learning the game in late November after a bunch of my friends bought it in some Steam sale. [smile]

So I believe I hit the Cobra but missed the paint.

Here to stay, though! I would go back and give money at the start if I could.
