I honestly think this article demonstrates just how important the years of "skunkworks" were to getting ED out in a timely manner. Anyone who believes that years of tweaking the engine, testing system code, and planning features didn't amount to squat is deluding themselves.
Doesn't really change the finished product that we got, which is all that matters. I don't have to be hard on the developers to state that ED is contentless and dull after the first 15 hours.
With regards to the first: No, it doesn't change the product - but I feel it should change one's perspective and give one a little more patience and understanding into the nature of not only game development, but software development in general. Had FD taken a longer time to develop ED, there would be tons more stuff in the game (and people would no doubt be complaining about that too, lol) but they didn't. They gave themselves a release date and they stuck to it; with or without all the features they initially wanted in. The fact that they stick to their guns and release when they say they are, releasing (most of) the content they said they would; instead of pushing the release date for years and years and finally releasing a product that is a watered-down hunk of garbage (think: many EA titles) tells me a lot about FD and the people who are running it.
I don't agree with either of those last statements; I find the current content in the game to be satisfactory, and I've clocked much more than 15 hours and I'm always enjoying myself. FDev are working hard to release new things, we've been getting regular patch updates and I know that ED is a long term project with lots more things to come; so I'm simply being patient. I'm content to enjoy what they've managed to produce so far; hell, I haven't even left the 500ly mark yet from my starter system, lol. Is the game
contentless? For me, no
but is it
lacking in content? Yes. For a game world this big, there should be a lot more content. What does console me however, is the knowledge that FD will be bringing more and more content to the party over time; I'm a patient person; I've bought the game, I won't suddenly lose my purchase and so I'm not averse to waiting.
