Requirements + Is it worth it

Hello,
so Im intrerested in buying Elite Dangerous.
I have few questions though.

How much time is it recommended to spend in game to... be able to achieve pretty much anything? You should play everyday for few hours to be able to do anything, or you can play from time to time? I don't have a lot of time for now.

How abouts system requirements?
Will
GTX 980ti + Intel Core i7-6700K + 8GB RAM be enough to play on the highest settings?

Are there any guilds/companies/teams that help new players to understand the game?

You should be fine specwise but you need to devote a very large amount of time to reach the highest ranks and get the best ships. You can do all of the basic tasks right off the bat but you won't be able to do the higher level versions of them as effectively.

Start with an easy question, huh..?

Specs should be fine..

The rest you can only answer for yourself imo..
my advice would be to buy the base game for whatever it costs now (£10?) and give it a go..
as for guilds etc, not really but could look up Adles Armada, they're always recruiting and will be prepared to show you the ropes, so to speak, whether you enjoy PvE or PvP and they are based in and around the starter systems :)

The actual requirements i would have to google, just like you. So no idea on that. On guilds: there are, but they are formed out of game, not supported in game. Also i personally never bothered for it. After finding out that everybody i ever mit in open was a psychotic murderer, who never learned to use any other way of communication but to attack, i got myself an invite for the private group Moebius. Just like in open, you generally only meet people at hotspots, that's a result of the game design, its server structure (or rather lack of that) and the size of the galaxy. But the people you meet there are friendly and helpful.

On how much you should spend in the game: that's very much up to you and your goals. If your primary aim is to fly the biggest (not necessarily best, but most expencive) ship in the game, expect to grind a lot. If you plan to participate in powerplay, again expect to grind a lot. But small and comparatively cheap ships are also fun to fly, often even more than the heavy big ones. So as long as the fun of flying works for you, and flying a ship is a lot of fun here, any ammount of time works, you can do just small flights or missions for half an hour or an hour a time, and you can binge-play for hours straight, whatever floats your boat.

Next to that, i know i have to hurry, because in a moment there'll be hordes of people rushing in here, who already played thousands of hours and still are on several hours a day, who will tell you that the game is bad and you should avoid it. :)

Im still not sure. Maybe I will give it a try soon. Just dont want to spend cash on somenthing I wont play. It happens to me way too often.

Specs are fine even for VR...The Cobra MK3 is the fastest ship currently and you can get into that within a few hours no problem. There's just as much fun in playing the little ships as there is in any other in fact you could argue that there is more because i) the NPC's provide a little more of a challenge at that level. ii) parts are cheap compared to the credits you can earn with them.

I wish i could give you more reliable advise. But it's very much a matter of taste and playstyle. A few pointers:
- If you want "themepark style" gaming, where you are told what to do, given missions to check off all of the time and not care for anything yourself, this game is not for you.
- If you want to be "on top" quickly, this game is not for you.
- If you love flying, love the feeling of flying a spaceship, this game might very well be for you.
- If you can make your own goals and plans, this game can very well be for you.
- If you can work with ressources, can stand small setbacks sometimes and have the patience to be in for the long run (or alternatively accept that limited gametime just means that you will stay in the small and agile ships), this game can very well be for you.

Neither of that is a hard guarantee, just some pointers. :)

I am a middle aged guy with a full time job, an hour each way commute and three children. My time is limited, but I find this is the ideal game, because I can go at my own rate and even though its a multiplayer game I am not severely impacted by my lack of playtime. I can dive on for a quick play and just have my own fun, progressing as time allows. There will be elements of the game you cannot play, some of the missions are timed and its real time not in game.

Landing and taking off from a large station are something that everyone should try at least once.

Are you for real asking about specs? Is there's any game that your rig can't handle?

Don't race towards the biggest ships. Doing so will inevitably feel like a grind, and this game has the potential to be the grindiest game of all time, depending on how you approach it.

Every ship in this game is fun to fly in their own way. My biggest ship is a Python. My favourite to fly is either a Courier or a Cobra Mk3 right now. I could have had either one of those after a week or two of just playing the game.

Hi!

To a large degree you get out what you put in. Some actions require a weekly commitment (specifically powerplay) but 95%+ of the game can be dipped in and out of at will.
Generally I'd say you can spend probably about 300 hours in the game and see/do everything properly (mining/exploration/combat/trading/smuggling/piracy/community goals etc) but after all the "standard" activities are done you can extend that life to a good 1000+ if you join a good player group or faction (or several) that do events and different activities like racing etc.
If you are short on playtime you can see most of what the game has to offer in about 50/60 hours but you'll miss a lot of the finer details. Also the developers are continuously updating so in 6 months time you may come back to find whole new elements to the game!

Should be, I'm on an i5 and GTX 780(SLI) and have even upped some of the resolutions to 8k via editing the config text files (there's some good guides about online).

Hit up the newcommers forum: https://forums.frontier.co.uk/forumdisplay.php?f=75
Specifically the galactic academy: https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=237551

Youtube videos and tutorials are also amazing for early on as you can see what they are doing and how they are doing it. There is also a manual somewhere.

Sometimes I play for 1/2 an hour at a time sometimes for a couple of hours occassionaly longer

The good news is there is nothing you must do in this game, you can do anything you want and it wont harm your progress. For instance you don't have enough for powerplay - then don't. You don't want missions because of the timer then don't

You run out of time half way through mining then just save and pick up next time

if I have 30 mins Ill do a quick trading run, an hour or so ill go mine longer I might well fire up my weapons

Haha, yes. The specs question was real. I've heard a lot about Space Games like Star Citizen and Elite Dangerous and about "the highest requirement's you've ever seen" so I wanted to ask.
Those are specs of PC I ordered and It will arive in like a week. Just wanted to be sure I will run the game nice and without problems.

There's a lot of games I have to... make up for all the time I wanted to and couldn't play. But I also wanted to check out somenthing I've never seen before and Elite Dangerous seems to be the perfect thing.

Sandbox is exactly the thing I'm looking for, however I feel kinda lost in games like this. I dont know where am I, what should I do, on what can I make cash, on what can I lose it. Thats why Im asking about time (which because of other games and Real Life of course I dont have much) and people who are able to help me and show me how to play.

I saw few gameplays on youtube and the game looks perfect. Im just not sure yet.
I used to play Eve Online for example. It was awesome but required hours, hours and more hours everyday to play and cointained a lot of content. It was way too much for me.

Specs are fine for anything up to VR.

The other question, though....

Yes, you can play from time to time. Although I wouldn't recommend to bet on it. In order to achieve everything, though - even if you played full-time, you couldn't do that. The game is just too vast. Apart from that, the game is reasonably difficult to master, so if you stay out of it for an extended period, you'll have to re-learn a lot of stuff. The warning around the explorers that you should run through the docking training mission after returning form an extended (weeks to months) journey really isn't a joke. Yes, I said 'months'. Check the Distant Worlds Expedition thread over in the explorer's forum.

As for understanding the game: that's an ongoing effort. But if you're talking about the basic techniques: there's the Galactic Academy. Not bound to any faction, group or whatever, but sure to help newcomers to find their feet. Check the Discord chat in the link (scroll down a bit to the 'Mentors' chapter). And there are lots of groups out there willing to accept new recruits.

One example of what you may find out there:

A ringed terraformable water world, situated in a bright blue planetary nebula.

Your PC will be more than capable.
You can play this game in short bursts, though realistically you need fifteen minutes at least to make a short trade run for example.
However my warning would be that it will consume your free time entirely until everything else you used to do is a vague memory.

Elite will feel exactly the same for a good week or two before you realise a few things about the underlying way the game is constructed. The learning curve is more like a brick wall but after a few hours learning the basics of flight it's incredibly rewarding knowing you've nailed it... That is until you try to land on a planet with 6x gravity and promptly scatter yourself over a few km :p

As above having a place to ask for advice, questions etc is very useful. The galactic academy has text and voice chat with people around almost 24/7, they can also meet you in game and help you learn the basics, there's a chap called Hellrazor who is renowned for meeting people in game and helping new starters for example. :)

Edit also this:

Considering I was running it very happily at nice smooth framerates on a 750Ti yes you'll be fine! (albeit 720p)

And you don't need to devote huge amounts of time - the smaller ships are more fun. They more manoeuvrable and quicker on the escape, but not ideal if hardcore battle is what you're after. A few missions here and there can wile a few hours away then you can just walk away.

You can also go mental and spend thousands of hours at it doing any number of crazy things - but if you want space flight in a roughly real galaxy this is it and your only real choice! Luckily it's a good'un :D Do it.

Just remember this: In this game, you can loose everything.. so pay attention to insurance.

I think it's important because you will realize that you will need to grind stuff to get things.. and if you're not careful, bad stuff happens (and another "I quit the game" thread in the forum)
Dont worry about the grind .. it's really okay .. just relax and fly..

Hoho, dont worry about that. I played some games that absolutely used me to losing everying.

Well, I think I will give it a try.
Gonna buy the game in a week or two. Thanks for your help! :)

Yeah .. There's people who lost few months of grinding on a single crash.. just saying it could be devastating..

safe fly CMDR :D

Hardware looks fine so you should be ok. Playing the game... Time is an irrelevance. Set yourself targets and goals - there's no guiding story in this game. Need help... Ask on the Forum and you'll get advice (some of it good - you'll need to decide what is right for you).

The most important advice you will get here is - always fly with enough money to cover your insurance for your ship (preferably enough for 3 buybacks). But beyond that - the galaxy is your oyster to do whatever you like :)
