Resetting your save - did you ever regret it?

I played ED for over a year (late Beta backer) and enyojed myself massively.
I own most of the ships, some severalfold. I could easily afford an Anaconda (credit-wise), but abstained due to a lack of interest. I rank 'elite' in combat and close to it in trading. I am not writing this to boast, but to point out that I invested quite a bit of time into this game.

Early this year, I did hit the "wall of repletion" and decided to stop playing. Don't get me wrong, this is not an "ED is boring" post. I don't blame the game; I had a blast during this year! However, this is something that happens to almost every game and the best thing to do is giving it a rest for a while. And while I already feel this "space itch" again, I want to wait until my Oculus Rift CV1 has arrived and ED is working with it (I have strong confidence in FD, that they will pull this through).

In order to get the "full VR experience", I decided to start from the zero-point: a Sidewinder and 1000 credits.
My reasoning is, that this will refresh my curiosity about every new ship. "How will it feel in VR? - I have to earn enough cash and reputation to get access!"

On the other hand, I am a little bit frightened about this step! There is no going back!
Will the fascination of the "first playthrough" that carried me over some (admittedly existent) lean periods kick in again?
Will I look back on all I had achieved and feel repulsed by the fact that I have to do it again?
Will I which I still had all the rare materials I gathered in light-year long expeditions to be prepared for the engineers needs?
Will I sit in my DBS when I face my first Thargoid cruiser, whishing back my FAS or A-rated Python?

So, here is my question (sorry for the long preface):

Those of you who reached an advanced state of the game (regarding ranking, reputation, credits, ships,...) after month and month of playing and did reset their commander - how did this decision turn out for you?

Did you ever regret your decision? If you did - could you overcome the frustration or did "the mountain" discourage you, as you now knew its real hight?
Or did the reset refresh your enjoyment of the game, just as you hoped?
Was it a decision you will happily repeat, if you will ever have the feeling of "lacking goals" and oversaturation again?

--

Sorry, if this all sounds pointless to you... I never played a MMORPG before. I never had to decide, whether or not to get rid of a long-term-character in e.g. WoW (not that this would be needed - as far as I know, creating a second character is no problem there).
I simply want to learn more about other peoples experience with this decision. :)

Ooooh.. the delete save game option... I confess I've looked at it there in the menu with morbid fascination... one day... one day...

Did'nt use the delete save option, but i wanted to Start again and role play a different character entire from the Trading Cmdr Wasp0, so i bought another Cmdr and did it that way!

Have got on really well, obviously i know most of the tricks, where to go, what to do, also made a promise to my new Cmdr that he would not Grind in anyway, meaning promotion and ranking would come as it comes, and if it don't come, who cares!!

I must admit i play my 2nd Cmdr more than Cmdr Wasp0..... Hmmm Interesting!!

I plan on starting from scratch(ish) at some point.. but resetting my save? no chance.

if you do not want to go full reset (never go full reset) you could do a halfway house like i will.

I plan to buy an anaconda, and wipe me out. any change that i have left i will buy palladium and dump it outside a noob system station or give to mates, and then i will start again, this time in an imperial eagle, stripped to stock.

my plan will be to play in the ships i skipped last time as well as ones which did not exist. i will also align to the feds, as oppsosed to the empire who i have worked for so far

its not full on wipe as i will still get advantages of my rep etc, but, i would like to reach Elite one day..

Yes Deggial..., never done this myself and probs never will in Elite Dangerous - I'm playng for a year now as well. Though have been doing this almost to any awesome RPGs out there (e.g. I'm playing "Witcher 1" for the 12th time now, never reachng the endgame yet, I so like the experience with Witcher's reality and so not willing to rush it in any way - even it takes me like 3 years now to play the game?..., and the thought of additional two full games awaiting me still - Witcher 2 & 3 is awesome!!!), so I think I can understand you and your dillema. The drill is though, in any other non-online game you can store your saves and get back to them. I have never got back to such, but the ability to do so was the one making me sleep well;) You wont be able to do so in Elite Dangerous. Thats why I would recommend you fully, to buy a 2nd account.

Begining with totally fresh start will be only so awesome for you, If youll be having a possibility to get back to all what you have achieved during the 1st year of yours with Elite. Even if you wil never load this old Cmdr of yours again, the possibility to do so will easy your future. Please do believe me:) Our mind is a tricky thing and the gamer's mind is even "tricker" imho. So I'd fully recommend you to do so - the price of the new account is fully worth your comfortable feeling for the next year with Elite Dangerous.

Fly dangerously Commander!!

I would never reset my save.
I took a month brake from the game and the space itch came back, I know it will allways come back after some time and I dont need to reset the save because of that.
With lots of credits and ships you can do all the same things as if you just started

I did reset my save back at launch, and had no regrets, since tbh I hadn't built up too much stuff (And I was naïve enough to believe I might have stood a chance in the race to Elite competition!! - I'm still not there yet!)

However, since I own a second account, I doubt I'll ever reset my main again, - since I've had the experience of building up a nest egg (much easier second time round!) - just wait for the profitable CG's !
I reckon one of my Chars will be heading out into the mists of beyond on an exploration trip, but having the Alt allows me to play within the bubble as well - I just haven't decided which way round to do it, since I only own Horizons on 1 of the accounts (Although I choose not to play it, as I found the planetary stuff boring).

I have 2 accounts for just this reason.

The second account I reset regularly to demonstrate "low level" play to new players and also to play a self imposed Ironman.

I really enjoy messing about in the smaller ships, so its quite refreshing starting back in a sidewinder every now and then.

I've done it a few times. I like the struggle when starting out a new game, but when you get to the large ships I feel the game kinda loses something... The only thing I regret from the last reset, is that I obviously lost my max Empire/Fed ranking, really wish I could get that back.

You are well on the path to Enlightenment. I applaud your attitude.

I've been wanting to reset my save for some time now. Since I moved from solo to open as my main mode of play I feel a bit dishonest with my rankings. My combat rating of Expert (Really, am I?) comes from killing AI and I only have 3 deaths. I think this would be rather different if I had played in Open from the start.

I like the option of a second commander so I can have one in the bubble that I can use to do 'stuff' and leave Bran as the Explorer, maybe this is an option for the OP?

Reset a lot in the early days, until I got the hang of stuff. Sometimes thought about resetting since, but never had the courage. Then Horizons happened and shortly after Elite Dangerous season 1 went on sale for a tenner. I now have a second commander that I can use to experience all the fun of starting again without loosing everything I built up. :)

Why would you do that anyway?

Yeah, OP what are you thinking? You should play exactly the way this guy thinks you should!
.
Idiot aside..I would get a new account, if I were you! You have a lot invested that you are obviously concerned about..the no going back scenario could hit you hard!!
.
I last reset about 2 mnths ago with assets of approx 700mil ,fed rank Post Cmdr, all fighters up to & including FDL/FAS plus Clipper & Asp...never regretted it (well maybe once when I wanted to buy a Courier!..though the Imp rank Master doesn't take too long)
.
One thing I love however, is trying out the smaller ships I missed the first time around when the credits they earn actually mean something to you..and being attacked by cmdrs in A spec'd Vultures, Clippers & wings of Vipers/Cobras thinking 'novice/competent DBS - 'should be pretty easy!' :D...Hehehe! Happens pretty often in HazRESs & I am always tempted to post the embarrassing vids for cmdrs who tried that this yr!

It is a great option for you Sir, go for it. It's only £19.99 if you don't want Horizons, which i think is great Value. New Cmdr, does not need to go to planets, he gets on very well in the black ;) ;)

Like Garix I tried it in Horizons beta but only after I'd tried some of the new stuff. It's not so much the credits as having to build up all the reputation again. I really don't want to lose what I've built up. I wouldn't mind a second character, but I'm not keen on paying twice for the privilege.

I bought it when it was on offer for £9.99 ;) even better deal!

I've reset my save 6 times. I did it after playing for 2 weeks in Solo to get the hang of the game and again when 1.3 came out. Three times I've done so after ending up dead and broke and back a Trevithic for a second time with the same CMDR.

Last time was when 1.5/Horizons came out. That's the only one I regret as 1.5 was a major disappointment - I mostly do missions rather than grinding at anything and most of the missions now are a bug-ridden mess (anyone whose read my posts since then will now how I feel about that).

This time I'd had a cunning plan: I'd parked a good ship near Trevithic and so, when I was killed for the 3rd time in quick succession (and so lost my beautiful 28,000,000cr ASP) I was quickly out of the free Sidewinder and into something worth flying. Sadly I got cocky (I badly wanted to kill something, but instead ...) and was quickly back at Trevithic in a free Sidewinder. <sigh>

I was tempted to wipe my save again. but I pressed on and now, less than 5 days later, I'm in a 'C' rated Cobra with money in the bank and well on my way to being back in an ASP (grinding this time though).

Hopefully the new missions in 2.1 will have been properly tested and properly bug-fixed before it's released.

Honestly, i didn't ever reset my save. And i will never do.
Going through all this painful grind... At beginning of my career, all this grind felt not this painful, because i was new to game and impressions from it made me not notice grindy gameplay. But now...

No, i will never reset my save.

I've done it once, when I was rich enough to own a combat Python, and had no regrets. I'm now back to almostthe same point.

An alternative is to do a 'soft reset' - tie up all your assets in ships and modules, store them away, then start again in a stock Sidewinder.
