Resetting your save - did you ever regret it?

This thread has persuaded me to go for a "soft" reset.

Tonight I'm going to put all my funds into my new Gunship, I'll park it ready for 2.2 and play a newbie until 2.2 is released :)

I've only ever played in Solo & Mobius as well, I'm going to play this soft reset in Open!

Only issue I can see is that my slightly higher combat rating could cause my little ship to get interdicted by some pretty powerful NPCs.

I played ED for over a year (late Beta backer) and enyojed myself massively.
I own most of the ships, some severalfold. I could easily afford an Anaconda (credit-wise), but abstained due to a lack of interest. I rank 'elite' in combat and close to it in trading. I am not writing this to boast, but to point out that I invested quite a bit of time into this game.

Early this year, I did hit the "wall of repletion" and decided to stop playing. Don't get me wrong, this is not an "ED is boring" post. I don't blame the game; I had a blast during this year! However, this is something that happens to almost every game and the best thing to do is giving it a rest for a while. And while I already feel this "space itch" again, I want to wait until my Oculus Rift CV1 has arrived and ED is working with it (I have strong confidence in FD, that they will pull this through).

In order to get the "full VR experience", I decided to start from the zero-point: a Sidewinder and 1000 credits.
My reasoning is, that this will refresh my curiosity about every new ship. "How will it feel in VR? - I have to earn enough cash and reputation to get access!"

On the other hand, I am a little bit frightened about this step! There is no going back!
Will the fascination of the "first playthrough" that carried me over some (admittedly existent) lean periods kick in again?
Will I look back on all I had achieved and feel repulsed by the fact that I have to do it again?
Will I which I still had all the rare materials I gathered in light-year long expeditions to be prepared for the engineers needs?
Will I sit in my DBS when I face my first Thargoid cruiser, whishing back my FAS or A-rated Python?

So, here is my question (sorry for the long preface):

Those of you who reached an advanced state of the game (regarding ranking, reputation, credits, ships,...) after month and month of playing and did reset their commander - how did this decision turn out for you?

Did you ever regret your decision? If you did - could you overcome the frustration or did "the mountain" discourage you, as you now knew its real hight?
Or did the reset refresh your enjoyment of the game, just as you hoped?
Was it a decision you will happily repeat, if you will ever have the feeling of "lacking goals" and oversaturation again?

Sorry, if this all sounds pointless to you... I never played a MMORPG before. I never had to decide, whether or not to get rid of a long-term-character in e.g. WoW (not that this would be needed - as far as I know, creating a second character is no problem there).
I simply want to learn more about other peoples experience with this decision. :)

One day in February 2015, while in the control options the doorbell rang and my Significant Other opened the door to a small flood of acquaintances, distracted and wanting to quickly integrate with the friendly, noisy peeps, I hit the clear save in error. At that time it just went plop, done. I realised in horror my Anaconda, Python and other assorted craft were gone along with around 100 mil. Plus all my ranking progress vanished with a whoosh into the big black space place.
I gritted teeth turned smiled sweetly and joined the party that was happening. By the way was a good party.

Next day I talked with my Partner, party over by now of course, about whether to carry on with ED. The end result was not sure, so took a week off then made the decision to return. I put a ticket in asking them to please put a screen warning of ARE YOU SURE or something. Told them what happened and how inattention on my part led to the clear save. I didn't expect an answer so left it at that, and retuned to a Sidey. Being a KS and beta I had a couple of extra ships and was able to kick off in a MK lll Cobra and some cash from other ships I was entitled to, with my mercenary level backing.
Two months later apart from all my rep I was back in an Anaconda when I received and email from FD telling me they were sorry for what had happened, the delay in answering my ticket and had credited me with around 280 million for losses.

So OP I cleared save but in error. Would I do it again, voluntarily? No as the grindy part of the game is just too grindy, Rep, Ships, Ranking and cash. My advice to you would be sell all your stuff, make a note of your cash, and tell yourself that figure represents 0 credits. You will still have that cash and your rep and ranking plus any status, but if you only spend cash down to that figure you noted, you should be able to simulate a soft reset and work yourself back up to the other ships. But even with a Clear Save you never really do clear all as you can never forget all the experience you have acquired since you began this adventure.

I find this post a year later and find myself aligned with the OP. That mysterious reset is ever looming. Partly because of Brandon's comments during the release of Horizons if you really want to experience Elite reset the save. I agree on the progression meaning something. I have what I want my ship interest peaked at the Python since I've owned all manner of expensive crap but it just doesn't spark interest like it used to. To be honest the best fun I've had in the last 2 years was Distant World's Expedition and being a Fuel Rat.

I too find myself looking at the reset button a lot.

Why I haven't yet
1. Ranking
2. Losing the name I've put a few first discoveries on. (Which I must say I actually hate my commander name)
3. In some weird way feels like shooting yourself in the head.
Why I want to
1. Boredom
2. That initial progression trying to get the big score
3. True progression with no grinding so I can love the game again. After I got back from Distant World's I grinded out my Cutter after that I lost my drive to even want to play the game.
4. Learning to fly FA off from the ground up
5. True combat rank representation most of my rank was acquired prior to engineers.
6. Some sick part of me wants to go iron mode too.
Why I don't alt
1. Ship amenities mostly, paints, kits and such (if these things transferred I'd buy a new key)
2. Honestly just want one character to represent me not multiples.

Curious if the OP pulled the trigger?

To be fair I think the age of this thread warranted a new discussion.

Inb4 the lock.

I recently reset my save.

I was drunk at the time and didn't remember until I logged back in the next day and got a surprise :)

I've done it a couple of times but it's not that big a thing and it's nice just flying around a newbie again.

I did. Once upon a time. When Horizons came out. I enjoyed the feel of starting again. I had only been playing a few months by then though. I had ranked up enough for a FAS and iClipper and had an Anni.

If you can afford VR, you could probably save a bit more to get a second account.

I now prefer to play my second at a far more leisurely pace.

But every now and again I like to get into my main just so I can land and drive the SRV and look up at how big the thing is.

Engineer the Sidey! Such a blast

I've done it once, no regrets at all.

The reason was simple. I had been playing in Solo to get to the ranks I had but once I found that Open is far more fun I thought it was a bit off to have a dangerous rank plus it attracts the wrong sorts too so I reset everything and now I can fly with the ranks that reflect my time in this mode. :)

Curious if the OP pulled the trigger?

He did and he didn't regret it! :D

However, I didn't do it again since then and I probably won't do it any time soon - and the main reason for this is VR.
Everything is soooo beautiful and immersive (I know, I know! But when is it justified if not now?) that even "mundane" tasks are fun!

My second "play-through" is also way slower than my first one. I did some serious trading in my "first life", starting the game for some minutes during breakfast just to complete a loop with my T9.
This isn't possible in VR any more (nerd-marks are too embarrasing when sitting in the subway ... ;) ) and despite the generally increased earning opportunities in the current game, I haven't reached all my goals so far.
While I own an Anaconda (for mining) now, I've never outfitted an iCourier, experienced a Diamondback or piloted a Corvett in VR.

Engineers added so much variety to the game, that there is still room for experiments.

And then, there are those rumors about aliens ... I am looking forward to my first encounter (wasn't "lucky" with my hyperdiction attempts).

There is sooo much more to do in ED now!

However, I'm not so far away from my second 'Elite' rank in combat. While I am eager to reach it (Founder's world access!), I am looking forward to it a little bit anxious, too. Another goal reached, one inventive less to keep playing (without another reset).
I'll see, whether or not the always progressing game will keep me interested in my current commander save. But I am optimistic. :)

@BigZiggyHD: Unfortunately, the experience of the 'early game' wasn't as intense as I expected (and remembered from my first play-through). Credits come so fast now, that I rushed through the early ships like nothing, skipping a lot of them in the course. True, I knew lots of the tricks now and did play more efficient for sure. But I even omitted some of the things I could have done and felt that the early game progression is too fast.
I really would love, if FDev would find a way to keep new players longer in the starting ships. (E.g. by restricting ships to Pilot Federation ranks? I know this proposal is contested, though.)

One thing will never feel the same, though: The experience of discovering something new.
I still remember on of my first experiences in ED - and I think, one of my best experiences in a computer game EVER: I opened the galaxy map for the first time and zoomed out .... and out ... and out. And cold showers ran down my spine and I litereally sat on my chair trembeling, stunned by the pure size of the galaxy I was thrown in!
I'll never forget this feeling (hopefully). But I also never will have it again - no matter how often I will reset my save.

Gotta either have serious melons to do this, or just not having invested in engineers/serious faction ranking.

I notice in this thread I talked about a "Soft" reset back in March last year.

What I eventually did was a full "hard" reset with 2.1 releasing. When Engineers came out I reset and started from scratch.

Never regretted it, it was awesome fun, I did everything much quicker as well.

Now I'm in a fully engineered Anaconda, building up my fleet.

I don't think I would do it again though, but never say never!

It's a lot easier to start with a new position and the knowledge of what to do. It seems to get easier with each reset actually as money making is not as stingy as when I started in V1.0.

I was in a Cobra within two hours of my last reset. A-rated Vulture within a week.
