Resource Extraction Sites - No Pirates Anymore

What are resource extraction sites for?

I saw in the forums that they were good for hunting pirates, but there are never any ships at any of the ones I go to and certainly never any pirates to hunt.

I having been going to these in the systems around Lave.

You can also hunt pirates at nav beacon, probably more pirates in fact.

After so many hours at nav beacons and USS, I gotta say I'm starting to hate how 400 billion stars all feel the same. Nav beacons are horrible, because there's no reason for anyone to be there, other than me hunting pirates.

I want pirates to act like cut throats, not just fly idly around waiting for you to pick them off. In the 80/90s they at least had mob style AI and attacked in packs, here its like they've got backwards. An Elite pirate can be destroyed too easily. There's just no danger in Elite Dangerous from a bounty hunt perspective.

Exactly what I was thinking.

Fly into a extraction site or anarchy system with 1-2 tons of valuable cargo and you will find pirates more aggressive. I do it all the time as bait.

I agree but if this is what you're looking for you can get much closer by doing one simple thing...

Bounty hunt with cargo on board. Makes things much more active and interesting. Biggest attack I had to deal with was an anaconda and a python attacking me at once.

Edit: Ninja'd but still valid :)

I actually am surprised you don't jump in at the nav beacon when you arrive at a system, it'd make things spicy in some places!

Hunting pirates in a safe, law abiding system will have you scanning nothing but.. law abiding citizens (kind of makes sense in hindsight, doesnt it?)

Thus, you need a pirate faction on the factions list, with a decent % (9-20) to have some good hunting. You can tell them by name (Purple Pirates, etc) or if unsure, click on them to see their faction type: Unfettered (lawless) means they are a pirate faction, and their % will be reflected on the % of ships you scan that are wanteds.

And if youre like me and camp out at a goldmine of bounties for a while, your kills will eventually drive that factions % to 0. then its time to move on. Job done

That is true, here's hoping a more sensible encounter system gets developed at some point, as it stands there's no reason for ships to transit nav beacons and also no reason for pirates to hang at RES where all the security ships are.

Dude, the AI doesn't work together yet. I've found myself going to USS and playing with the knowledge that the AI are AI, and letting one pirate stray off out of scanner range of the rest, killing him, and repeating until it's empty (since the AI of a faction don't go hostile if the guy you shoot at has a bounty. Fixed one problem and started another).

In fact, the only teamwork I've found so far is people ganging up on criminals. Glad to know our cut throat galaxy is so safe.

EDIT: I'm not proud of my behavior at USS. Exploiting the AI for a quick (but small, since bounty hunting sucks unless you're already kitted out) buck

Thank you so much! Have some rep!
I have been struggling to work out where all my bounty-heads had gone for the last few days!

Yes it would be logical... but too easy for player pirates to block the way. Maybe more nav beacons since having only one would require you to hyperspace through the star sometimes. Two would be enough if placed in good spots. Really I like the idea... no more non stop supercruising. You hyperspace to to nav beacon in normal space and have to charge FSD from there. Much more interaction with the world and with players. Also an easy way to make anarchy systems truly dangerous - just a simple pirate spawn rate at nav beacon. More time consuming trips could be countered with little range boost for all ships. Great idea imo and for the devs it should be easily doable... I think...
