Respawning on a carrier after dying

Question...

If the last place you docked was on a carrier (not your own), do you always respawn on it if you die? If so, what if that carrier has since moved and is now thousands of LY away? And if not, where does it spawn you instead? The nearest station or the last station before the carrier?

Been Googling for the answer, but it appears unclear.

I'm just about to head off from a carrier back to the bubble. It'll be a few weeks before I get there. A long time for something to go wrong.

If you lucky and the carrier has a shipyard whit like sidewinder or cobra then you can buy that and kill yourself to select starter system... but your ship will still be in the carrier. So you gone have to tranfer it out.

BUT !!!
don't dock ad a carrier you do not know the owner and log off the game. Because that cmdr don't even know you are on board.

AFAIK you spawn on the carrier, but I'd like this confirmed by player experience as well.

Yes, you spawn on the carrier. If you choose to rebuy the ship, of course. Tested it the hard way yesterday.

I attacked someone else's carrier last week (while mine was parked about 2 Ls away)
...and i respawned at a detention center about 50 Ly away

....being Wanted might change what happens

I was quite happy that when I got destroyed for pad loitering I respawned on my FC - if I'd respawned in prison I would have had a long 15k LY trip back out to reclaim my FC

Yes, but it remains unclear if that still applies if the carrier has since moved.

Imagine a hypothetical situation: You dock at a carrier in your billion cr engineered Corvette with a 12 ly jump range. Some time later, get destroyed in a fight. Rebuy screen, respawn at the carrier. However that carrier is now x,000 ly from where you started. Self-destruct, don't rebuy, respawn back in the bubble with a Sidey.

I just thought they were part of the minigame where you have to sift through them to find the place you actually wanted to go.

If I remember correctly, you respawn there even if you did not previously dock but merely dropped out of supercruise in its vicinity.

I don't see why that should matter. People routinely respawn on outposts and planetary bases without shipyards.

However that necro'ed post was made not long after an investigation* of where one would respawn if the station in the system had no shipyard - hence asking if the FC status.

* i.e. from Aug 2019:

I did a test in April - ....:

1) If there is a shipyard in the system then you can rebuy in that station (even if you have not docked there).

2) If there is no shipyard in the system then your rebuy choice is the last station you were docked - not the nearest shipyard.
