Newcomer / Intro Returning commander

Hi folks,
I was a fairly casual player having limited free time and tended to just potter about myself mostly on solo.
I played since maybe 2014 or 2015 occasionally and stopped a couple of years ago maybe 2022. Mostly as got busy in life and also got a bit fed up with lack of structure in the game, grinding transport routes for money and just didn’t get very far at all in respect of ships/equipment, depth of knowledge of the game and skill.

You get what you put in I suppose.

Anyways, I watched a few video’s on you tube recently and decided to start the game again. Was expecting a massive download but it updated fairly quickly.
Fired up and went into legacy mode not realising it had split and then did the update for live mode after essentially wasting a day of playing it and progressing.

Am now in live and enjoying the depth of the game. Of course I knew there were loads before but it didn’t seem to have any structure.
I never got into engineers so will do that now, also wasn’t a huge fan of horizons (well the SRV, don’t mind planetary landings) so I doubt I will do the fps stuff in odyssey. I just like flying around, exploring mainly and blowing the occasional thing up!

Have to say power play is vastly improved, seems a bit more intuitive and less ‘grindy’. In fact it’s fair to say that as a whole about the game.

Was a bit wary on pc requirements as I have an old machine, it used to run everything pretty much maxed. Have relaxed the settings a bit to preserve frame rate, have two cards but SLI not supported in game, I don’t even think nvidia support any more.
Anyways it still looks good and I get max frames in space with some slow down in station and busy areas. Am not running 4k or multiple monitors so 70/80 - 144 fps is not bad!

Bought an eagle the other day and fitted it out, had great fun with it having skipped it before.
Great addition to sidewinder (bought again after selling first one), cobra mk III (because why not), type 6 (money maker) and asp X already in the fleet.

Am now concentrating on optimising these, mostly by reducing weight and getting the right parts. Will be getting a vulture soon as my combat ship, although the eagle is great fun but it lacks a bit of firepower and strength.

May the frontier be with you…

I was going to ask a question but ended up going on a bit and forgot!!

Anyways, how do you guys communicate in game when flying in a wing?
Text chat in game is one thing but I’m thinking for voice chat.
I may join a squadron and/or fly with friends.

Do you guys use specific apps, discord for example or is there a facility in game?

I have a headset and mic for PS4, which I can use but I’d probably rather play the sound through speakers and have a head mounted mic. Does anybody do this and have it working ok, no feedback etc through speakers?

I’m using HOTAS and probably maxed out my key bindings but may get one where it activates on voice input rather than PTT to keep my ‘hands on the wheel’ so to speak.

I have a front port for mic on case (never used), I suppose it’s no different to desk mic’s of old.

Welcome back and continue to have fun at your pace.

There are comms in the game but some organised groups use Discord or similar.

I haven't used them in a long time but used a headset with boom mike when I did.

Welcome back to the Elite Galaxy commander!

Maybe you've already found most of the resources listed below. If not, have a look at them and in any case don't hesitate to ask questions here in the forum.

In-game help is available in the form of menu links to the Pilot's Handbook and the Codex (right-hand cockpit panel 1st tab).
For a very good beginner's guide see: An in-depth beginner’s guide to Elite: Dangerous.
Tutorials covering all aspects of the game, many of them in the form of YouTube videos, are available from ED Tutorials.
There is a wealth of useful information available in these forums spread out over hundreds of threads. Thanks to commander @Alec Turner you can access all of that information and more via a single thread: Alec's best of the forum (and elsewhere) [v2].
Here is a good guide on the background simulation (BGS) that simulates the economical and political changes caused by player actions in inhabited systems.
Also check out the inara.cz website with (almost) realtime info on practically everything in the game.
The coriolis.io and edsy.org websites let you design your ships before buying them.
There are many more Tools and Websites created by fans that make life in the galaxy better.
And last but not least, the Elite Dangerous Wiki contains extensive information on nearly all aspects of the game.

Thanks, yeah that was what I was thinking minus the speaker.
Although it would be cool to have the ones with one speaker that has voice only and then rest of sounds from PC speakers!

Thanks, yeah I’ve been having a rake around the last few days and read up on a lot of guides etc.

I did use some stuff from before, mainly data for trading but the site I used is no longer available. I was of aware of Inara before but didn’t use it, now I do.
There are a few tools etc, not sure if I will use them or not. Have linked my profile to inara to make use of that easier.
May do so for coriolis.io aswell.

The problem is I’m pretty much on my phone for all this as my laptop battery died and is obsolete (circa 13 years old), a tablet I got a few years ago has been dead for a year or two no idea why.
So trying to read stuff on a phone is tricky as I don’t want to switch to desktop when using elite!!

The in game information is vastly improved and it’s fair to say there was a decent community before but it has just grown and grown. It’s this type of thing that keeps you in a game long after you have done everything (which I probably won’t have time for once the holidays are finished).

Not a huge fan of you tube information videos personally, I prefer to read stuff (usually so I can scan for key info) but will take a look. It’s sometimes better to observe, especially in dynamic situations!
I should also take a look at the training missions again as more have been added but I’m a fan of learning on the ‘job so to speak’…

I keep seeing o7 everywhere, what does that mean?

I have played most of the time on laptops and while the current one isn’t too bad sound has not been great in the past so I have tended to use headphones etc also it is an old semidetached house and I don’t care for the neighbours listening in.

actually would it not be O7...?

maybe space salutes go above the head!
Yeah and typed that way it is a left-handed salute. O7 requires you to press the shift-button while o7 can be typed quickly while keeping one hand on the stick/throttle.

Alternatively you can wave at other commanders: o/ or \o or \o/ but that last one usually means: Help!

Timely, funny and stolen from either here or FB... (sorry, original source unknown now)
