Newcomer / Intro Returning player who has forgotten everything. I've got questions!

Hey Commanders,

I bought ED direct from Frontier's website all the way back in 2014. I remember I played it for a few months, but back then there wasn't a whole heap to do yet, so I lost interest and never came back.

This week I bought myself a Quest 2 VR headset and all I see are people raving about how awesome ED is in VR, so I thought I'd look at jumping back in!

But I have so many questions!

  1. First things first - because my copy/license for ED came direct from Frontier, I'm not even sure if I can play it in VR via Steam? Is there a way I can 'convert' my version to a Steam version? Or is this not necessary?
  2. I get that 'Odyssey' is a expansion that allows for disembarking on foot - that doesn't super interest me for now. Can I get by without Odyssey just fine for the time being?
  3. Will my version of the game still be supported? What's this about 'Horizons' being part of the default game now? Will that apply to my version of the game too?
  4. What else has changed in the game that I should know about in the last 9~ years? (I understand this is a semi-ridiculous question, but I'm curious as to what people share with me in response!)
  5. Anyone here who uses a Quest 2 VR headset and has any tips or tricks I should know about for playing?
  6. Is there a good Oceanic/Australian ED Discord server I should join?
Thanks in advance folks! It's much appreciated!

  1. I believe you should be fine without steam unless your headset needs Steam to work, there will be a way to link to steam if absolutely necessary.
  2. Yes.
  3. Only the current version of the game works, what you have now will get updated to the current version playable.
  4. Engineering came in with Horizons and planetary landing about 7 years ago, the ability to transport the most annoying cargo possible, Passengers, came after that. Aliens and ancient aliens arrived and have now escalated into a war where one side is trying to exterminate the other in self defence. Wings/teams, limited multiplayer, Ship Launched Fighters with NPC crew who quickly become billionaires. Mining, new advanced sorts of mining. New ‘bubbles’ of human presence. Many new ships and for just 5,000,000,000 credits not including outfitting and on going costs you can have a Fleet Carrier to carry all your ships around in.
  5. Not me.
  6. Pass.

1. I don't play in VR but re Steam - you can get a Steam key or something from your frontierstore account page

2. Yes

3. They have kept the old code version of Horizons and the base game available for people to use - the call that "Legacy" - that doesn't get updated and is completely separate from the new code version (v4.xx) which is called LIVE - that is Horizons and Odyssey.

4. Just about everything - the main thing you will notice is the different UIs (User Interfaces) - get in and play about to find out. lol

5. No idea but there is a specific VR sub forum on here.

6. No idea - sorry

P.S. Welcome back, have fun.

1) You don't need Steam. With your old licence from FD, you can get a Steam key from FD support, but there's little use to it. You'll earn yourself a lot of issues any time ED is updated (frequently) and Steam messes it up (regularly). If your headset is useable as a Windows WMR device, you will need to download and install SteamVR - but that's a completely independent software that is incidentally distributed by (and via) Steam, but otherwise without connection to the Steam gaming portal. I play in VR via a Reverb (WMR device), and use an (ok, two actually) old licenses directly from FD.
A few caveats apply - but see the VR subforum for those. One of my main issues only applies when you're using am AMD 6000 series GPU.

2) Definitely.

3) Yes. Horizons has been rolled in, so everyone can use it. Once you're done installing everything, you will have (probably...)
  • Elite Dangerous Horizons
  • Elite Dangerous Legacy Horizons
  • Elite Dangerous Legacy
With the first one being the current live Galaxy (that includes Thargoids and Community Goals), the other two being the older Galaxy without Thargoids and no ongoing updates or support and a seperate BGS (and CMDRs). Anything you have or do in Legacy will not influence anything in Live.

4) Treat it as a new game. Everything has changed. Well, maybe not everything - Sidewinder and Cobra Mk.III are still around. Before you go on a longer trip, familiarize yourself with the (new) GalMap. There are some (marked) no-go areas at the southern end of the Bubble you might want to avoid.

5) As I said, HP reverb here. Yes, VR subforum is the better place to ask. Otherwise, HOTAS/HOSAS should go without comment. AMD RX6000 series drivers have an issue when rendering planets (22.5.1 driver is the last one that works). Other various graphics issues - I can live with them, others won't (and have created solutions via 3rd party software). And on-foot gameplay does not (and will not) work in VR. You'll get a rectangular flat screen projected in your headset.

6) European here, so nope.
