Returning to ED need help

Hi All
I have had a break from ED, came back once beyond 4 was completed. I am stuck with the new features.
FSS.
Combat Mode.
Discovery Mode.
I have watched youtube to map the joystick controls to try to understand it, if feels like trying to tune a radio in (1980s ref) Can anybody reccomend any tutorials etc on how to use it, and any explination of the combat/discovery modes. As none of seems to help. Used to enjoy Ed now just frustrated....
I use an X55 and Voice Attack

Have you tried the default config? Works pretty well on my X52.

Combat and discovery mode is pretty simple. There is a button that allows you to switch between the modes. All your combat stuff works only in combat mode and all the scanning stuff works only in the other mode.

Thanks CMDRS appreciate the help, started the video. Had to play about with tuning to get to be usable, just now need to sort out probe launches.

Short answers:

- Combat mode and analysis mode is a toggle keybind. Most scanner and some other things only work in Analysis Mode, weapons and such only in Combat mode. Analysis mode also shows you overlays after probing things and so on.

- FSS: you can bind activation and deactivation to the same button! First honk, then tune the radio thing to one of the signals and focus those blue blips. those arrows show you the way once you are near a fitting blip. zoom in to discover what it is, zoom out and go on. It helps to bind incremental zoom buttons in some cases. Also, you can still just honk and go on if you just want to grab some exploration data cash.

- Probe launcher aka Detailed Surface Scanner: This is a still a module you need to equip. Bind via firegroup, activate via fire button you just set. Shoot probe via the same fire button. Exit probing mode via keybind OR by toggling to Combat mode (yes, that works).

The tutorial videos n stuff should cover the rest. There is nothing frustrating or complicated about the new mechanics. it's just new mechanics and keybinds. Once you used it a few times it becomes second nature.
Welcome back and fly safe.

I've got the hang it (i think), thanks for the advice. but is there a way of seeing which planets you have mapped? or do ypu just work down the system map in planet order?

I just use the system map. If you hover over each planet with the 2nd tab on the left hand display selected, it will tell you if it has been mapped or not, and that means by you. As you do that, the popup dialogue on the right hand side will also tell you if it was first mapped by another cmdr. Any planets you have already mapped will also show the blue grid on them as you approach them if I recall.
