Newcomer / Intro returning to game after trade run boredom , want to try combat need a little advice

hi all. i have my type 6 with 104 ton cargo, but i really cant be bothered just running back and forth to just trade. Am going to keep the ship for if i fancy trading again . I want to try the combat, killing some npc and some navel progression kill missions . The problem is have is i only have 1 million credits to spend. Is this enough to get me started, as in getting a ship and a few upgrades so i can complete the missions and have some fun ?.

It certainly is enough money.

With a million, you could easily buy and upgrade a Sidewinder or an Eagle into a really effective fighter. It will cost a fair bit more - say cr3 million - to fully upgrade a Viper, but with a Viper, the high-paying assassination missions are a breeze.

3m you say , thats not so bad i suspose i could grind a little more on trade runs to get that extra money , then all i have to do is learn how to do combat :) thank you for your time

Combat is really fun. I started upgrading my Sidewinder and eventually traded it in for a Viper. Both ships were upgraded as I earned more credits doing bounty hunting.

No, don't do that. You don't want to start learning how to do combat against the assassination targets as they are tough...

Get a cheap Eagle (the most manoeverable ship), pimp it up, put gimbled weapons on it then fly out to a Nav Beacon and start picking fights with 'wanted' ships. Don't start a fight with big ships like Anacondas, Pythons etc. and also be careful to note the combat rank too. An Elite pilot is going to put up much more of a fight than a Harmless...

You'll learn the ropes this way and also pick up a few bounties along the way for your trouble. Then when you have a feel for it you can sell back the Eagle and upgrade to the Viper.

Also if you really haven't touched combat at all you should run through the Single Player Combat Missions for some tutorials outside of the game.

I had well less than 1 million when I first bought my Viper, which I think was a good thing because it taught me what modules were most important to upgrade vs. what I could use to get by. With mostly D and C gear (other than the A module Power Distributor), it was a cheap/serviceable solution to play and learn with, especially against NPC and Combat Mission targets.

yer it will be nice to have two ships for different roles in game, so looks like just a bit more grindng . but aiming for the 3 million mark is not so far away. Then i will be equipped for two roles in elite , should be fun . And i must say i really do admire people who spend so much time trading back and forth to same place .

I wasn't suggesting that they buy and kit out a Viper and just jump straight into those missions! That would be incredibly stupid!

The OP should watch a couple of YouTube videos first at the very least. That's how I learned to do it.

Regardless, those missions really aren't that tough; they just require boring gameplay in order to be easy. Kiting is easy, although the kill comes much quicker if you don't do it. There's something really satisfying about getting in close and down and dirty with the Anacondas and killing their thrusters. I like watching the turrets fire as the ship spins in space.
