reverse flying and how to beat it?

That's not the point. OP raised this question, because we are fighting a seal-clubber in Eravate. And he only cares about murdering Sidewinders. He doesn't want to fight US.
So that's the OP's point. How to force the fight upon the FdL that only want to troll you and then leave and continue clubbing seals. And the answer is - there is no way.
We can interdict him over and over and hopefully annoy him enough that he leaves. That's all.

If the FDL doesn't want to fight there is indeed not much you can do.

I was addressing the OP, not you. He seems to have problems making FDL run, while flying the FDL.

You make him run is 1:0. Is it not?

Hehe, that's not the point either. In fact the only goal we have is to keep him in fight as long a possible, because every minute he's not in SC save lives of several Sideys. :D

If the FDL doesn't want to fight there is indeed not much you can do.

Eggsactly.

Perhaps we should lower the reversal max speed on engines?

After all, the reverse thrust engines are far smaller than the regular ones.

And it might even impact some maneuverability on some larger ships.

oh yea, let's make it easier, because it's too hard for you.. I think not, sir.

there is a number of ways.

my favorite is let them fly backwards put silent running on and hit them with rails beyond 3 km.

If he's in an FdL with gimbaled multis, let him fly backwards all he wants and stay at 2.5-3km, 6 fully loaded chaff launchers(on an FdL) should give you more than enough time to drop his shields with railguns and do some serious damage, put a C3 beam in the huge hardpoint underneath you and use that when you run out of ammo for the rails or to soften up his shields before you open up with the rails. If he's using fixed multis those aren't going to be too hard to dodge at 2.5-3km where he wants to stay, so just use your lateral/vert thrusters and roll to avoid his fire. This is a question of outfitting your ship to do the job, the tactic itself is very effective, but not perfect because it lets the enemy know exactly what you're doing and what to expect. A porcupine presents a real problem to anyone that doesn't have a pointy stick long enough to poke it, but as soon as someone comes along with a 5 foot spear, the porcupine is screwed. I suppose an ace pilot with all railguns in an FdL flying backwards perfectly with rock steady FAoff aim is going to be really tough to deal with, but I'm quite sure that kind of pilot is the exception, not the rule.

yes..ask him if he wouldn't mind waiting while you pop to outfitting!

As far as your final point is concerned? Quite!! Best leave a pilot who can do that alone, imho!

If it's not a tank v tank battle - get out, swallow your pride and save your bank balance. So what? If this does happen a lot, invest in kinetic-biased armour to buy you time and two pods of chaff.

This has only happened to me once bear in mind, that was an FDL with lots of kinetics too. I was doing a community goal for combat bonds so I was armed to the teeth. So running a hot python going for big game, 3 large bursts, 2 med turret cannons, armoured and reinforced. It's a battle-pig. 2 chaff and point defence, boosters & A-rated. It's packing.

Set your speed to 0 and let them to the work. Use impulse to keep a safe distance, most kinetics are not great at 2.5km. Plug away with lasers, set up laterals and impulse to get a drift on if you like but there's little point. At that kind of distance, it'll make little difference.

It's a pure attrition tactic, nothing more.

Despite armour, armed (3 large bursts and 2 cannon), two pods of chaff. It was an SCB battle royale until they ran out. I was down to about 12% with a blown canopy, they were suffering on 6%. They bugged out and had a 2.5km headstart. High wake... poof... gone.

Wow this thread has exploded walst I was at work lol.

many people saying if he runs let him it a win. To an extent yes.. what of your a bounty hunter? You only get the bounty if he dies..

I was useing chaff... and was corkscrewing to avoid the cannons but you cant chaff forever. Nor can you boost and face tank and shoot. he can reverse forever. It just seem like this needs to be ''fixed'' in some way, the advantages far out way the disadvantages, npcs can just brake off cus pilots are usualy after there bounty so they will have to stop and close in if they want the kill.

this is only the second pilot I have encountered doing this, the other was in a fas, you just cant boost past them for more than a few seconds before they turn and move away pummeling your face once more.

I always thought that boosting past them would resolve this but the boost speed increse isnt enough in alot of cases and in small manuverable ships you boost to 400 say and then back to normal speed almost as fast. You just touch the wall and run back, you might gain 150m on them but not for long.

so I do think that boost to normal flight speed ratio needs to be increased so you can keep knoking them off kilter with every boost cus you so much faster and they cant boost backwards. Thats all I can come up with amd im not shure what repercussions it might have else where.. I dont like the idea of nerfing reverse speed it just doesnt sit right.

I would love ask the Op. Can you take FDL ship or larger in hazarderd Res sites in a Imperial Eagel. Which means No Police.

If you want a maneuver to beat this tactic, try this:
Boost towards your opponent and start a FAO turn, if done right you should have your sights on the target while he is still turning. Important is that you start to turn before passing him. Repeat if necessary.

This guy^ is trying to help you all out..read what he says and practice on an NPC Clipper (cos they like to reverse)..expect to take a bit of damage while getting close, but the most important manoeuvres are the ones when you catch it..do not overshoot your final boost, otherwise you will have to start the sequence again, when your opponent turns and reverses the other way - catch it, get behind it - you are halfway there! Cmdrs much harder ofc - cos they adapt, but the tactics still hold up to scutiny, since, in my experience, this is plan B for the limited or out-flown opponent!

OP? In an Eagle? What are you doing PvPing in an Eagle? At least a Viper, pls!

One more thing - reversing is not a foolproof tactic..you just haven't figured out the solution, yet!

FA-off But seems it's not nessesery anymore. The answere is fa-off... Since you can go faster forward with boost then he at even 4 pips in engine backwards

It looks like a good advice, but if you actually tried it, you'd see that against FdL it doesn't work.

If you really want to get that reversing FDL you need a wing of good pilots in battle fitted fast Cobra Mk3s. Boosting Mk3s can easily flank the FDL. If you want revenge just get 4-8 good Cobra Mk3s in the target system un winged but patrolling. All jump in and bingo, make sure at least somebody has a wake scanner so he don't get away.

Yes.. I can kill anything 1v1 in an ieagle in a hazres things start to come unstuck if they are in a wing of more than 2 esp. If they are upwards of a viper and no one else is fighting them.

Hay I have to agree with Joe. Some ships are not great against other ships. If I was going after the FDL. I would go with a Vulture or another FDL. A Cobra could flank FDL. I would target weakest turn rate on ship which is turning right or left Thrust past the FDL. So they are forced rotate and turn at the same time. Also using all 6 degree of control can help.

If the "noob" pounded you, then I think the "noob" is not the noob at all. XD

No, no you misunderstand, he was killing noobs in his fdl he was an elite ranked pilot in a fdl and he was interdicting inocent sideys in eravate and killing them over and over.. I was trying to stop the mindles and cowardly slaughter of the noobs.

It looks like a good advice, but if you actually tried it, you'd see that against FdL it doesn't work.

I have assumed his second ship choice ( so not eagle ) he said he went back with FDL . To maximize his fly back technique he need mostly fly straight line. Basicly charging ship dictate his fly path since he is trying to face point him. So setting off FA and flying straight to him with boost will get closer to him.
The only issue here is if the ship able tank enough damage.

Though even this is in my personal opinion is not worth.

If you want fight .... You HAVE to fight opponent on your own rules and not his.... Because if you do... You will lose in many many cases.

I'm no PVP player, but couldn't you just stop and not follow. If he stops and goes after you, you fly backwards shooting him:p. If he low wakes out or runs, you chase him and frustrate him by pulling him over, taking a few shots then stopping again until he either stops going backwards and chase you or leaves. Repeat.
