Reviving Glasgow Zoo

22. Black Swan

Map-Swan.png

To the Right of the Ocelot enclosure and Cat House we have the former Black Swan enclosure and Teahouse (Cafe). Initially this was an information kiosk and throughout the Zoo's life was adapted into an enclosure housing Flamingo's, Swans and Goats (not all together). With the Cafe behind and historical 'big ticket' attractions either side, this area would have been a hive of activity, now a barren ghost town.

This is another area which has been heavily vandalised with lots of fire damage. I don’t know if the teahouse was pulled down when the zoo closed or was victim to fire raising.

Glorious as always!

39 & 40. Llama & Bactrain Camel

Camel-Map.png

I've needed a change in scenery so been working on a new part of the zoo. Downhill from central area we have the section where the zoo's monkey house, Manned Wolves and hoof stock where kept. At the foot of the hill some 18 meters lower than our last build, we have the old camel house. This area of 2 yards was connected by a stable. The exhibits had held Llams & Bactrian Camels from the 60’s. Towards the end of the Zoo’s life span Watusi Cattle were kept here with the right exhibit being fenceless thanks to a hidden moat, one of only 2 ‘modern’ exhibits in the zoo

This is another area in a state of disrepair, both yards are heavily overgrown with weeds while the brick walls are failing. The Camel house is heavily damaged with parts of the roof and walls missing. It was heavily graffitied; however, I’ve decided to leave it blank for now as I can’t get good enough images to produce a billboard and don’t have the time or patience to in game with font pieces.

36. Primate House

Moneky-House.png

Along the banks of the meandering Calder River we have the primate house, this was one of Zoo’s main attractions and quite possibly its largest building in terms of overall footprint. The primate house has been the most challenging build to date, not in terms of complexity more in a lack of reference pictures before it fell into a dilapidated and heavily vandalised state, it’s been like doing a jigsaw with no reference picture.

The exhibit had one main enclosure which has buckled over time, there were several smaller holding exhibits with some of these off show. There is a scarcity of information on this build so can’t say how accurate the recreation is.
