The problem with Surface Deposits is they just don't give you enough to worth bothering to look for them, and they almost never happen on rocks that you're already going to be mining anyway.
If you could be laser mining a rock already and then spot a surface deposit, that could potentially be worth doing, but again, the odds of having a rock that's BOTH high in mineral content AND has surface deposits is slim to none. I've been trying and have found maybe one in a thousand? Certainly not worth bothering with.
That being the case, I'd like to see surface deposits reworked. They should be MUCH more common - but not show up from your Pulse Wave Scanner. Almost all rocks should have at least one. That way, players who are laser mining can slightly enhance their yields by laser mining AND using an Abrasion Blaster at the same time. You wouldn't have to do this, but it would give the more experienced miners something to think about and do when they're bored.
That should make them more useful, and also make subsurface mining less frustrating, since the PWA would guarantee you either had a core or a subsurface deposit, not a surface deposit!
