Rift Noob Question

Is there a post discussing how to get set up using Rift and ED for PC?

I have no idea where to begin. I am considering buying the Rift for VR and want to know what I need (just the rift?) and how i need to set it up.

Thanks!

There are loads. Check out the VR section in my "Best of forum" thread for starters.

Edit: bottom line - plug in Oculus and get it set up using the excellent (and very easy to follow) Oculus setup program, install Dr Kaii's ED Profiler, pick a VR preset appropriate to your rig (mostly GPU), tweak settings to maintain 90fps while maximising the settings that are important to you (try to keep HMD quality set to at least 1.25), apply settings, be amazed! :D

As to what you need - an Oculus (Touch optional, unused by ED but it is stunning), a decent GPU (I'd suggest at least a 970), CPU not massively important (as long as it's half decent), 3 x USB 3.0 sockets.

In short:
  • Run the Oculus installer. That'll take you through the actual Rift setup.
  • Open the Oculus home program. Go to Settings. Tick the box that lets any application run in VR.
  • Start ED. In settings, change 3D from "None" to "HMD (headphones)". This is not located in the display settings, but below and independent of any sub-menu iirc.
  • Fall off your chair looking at the new menu.
  • Fall off your chair a second, third and fourth time actually starting the game.

I won't get into graphical adjustments. That's a whole new kettle of fish. You'll need much trial and error according to your preferences and PC. And yes, at first it will likely be unclear at times until you're familiar with strapping it to your face in a way that prevents it going blurry, which I can now do in seconds.

Thank you both! my rig is good to go. I just needed to know if i needed more than just the Occulus headset to get up and running.

Thanks!

^^^ this. Basically it's really easy. I should add that installing ED Profiler is not remotely essential (but in the long run I think you'll find it really useful, especially if you end up wanting to switch between VR and non-VR gaming sessions).

Oh, one other thing you might need is a HOTAS joystick (remember you'll be blind while wearing the headset so fumbling around for mouse and keys is far from ideal). The good news is that the Thrustmaster T-Flight HOTAS is a truly excellent joystick for the money and only costs £30 from amazon (note: that's another USB socket gone).

Already own it!

FWIW my rig includes a Radeon RX480 and Core i5 6600 3.5ghz.

I second the comment on the touch - just got mine and it's a blast - even the tutorial is fun!

Here's me playing it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Omtm9DcSVi0

I have to say, Robo Recall (which is free for Touch owners) is quite possibly the most fun I've had in a video game EVER. That said, although I desperately wanted another go this weekend, when it came down to it I went into Elite instead. Incidentally, since getting VR I find myself using the phrase "went into Elite" far more than the phrase "played Elite". Says all you need to know about VR really! :p

If not mentioned earlier, if you are already running ED from the launcher, you can continue to do so with the Rift. You do not need to use special keys for Oculus Home - just allow it to run 3rd party software (or whatever that option is). If you are playing through Steam, then I have no idea about what you may need to do to get it running in VR.

I highly recommend you get Voice Attack and a HCS voice pack for Elite. Not only immersive as heck, but but dare I say almost a requirement.
