Right what the hell is wrong with the controls?

The fact is you need roll without turn in this game, otherwise you won't be able to dock in a space station to start with, or align with the docking "slot" (and this isn't going to change, it is Elite lore).

The yaw controls are sufficient for subtle correction of flight direction while docking, and for keeping your reticule on your target in a dogfight, they're fine.

Please don't go FA off if you can't cope with this!

Because otherwise the game comes down to

Turreting

You just sit in 1 spot or move very slowly while aiming in every direction like a turret

it's horrible.

Weirdly though in no other space sim I have ever played have I ever stayed perfectly still and fired my guns, I'm either making full speed turns using negative strafe or matching speed of target and trying to stick behind them.

I must have been playing these games wrong for the last 20 or so years.

And yes, we have covered this many times.

No, you have been playing them right (as I'm sure you know). But lots of people played them 'wrong' quite deliberately, because it gave an advantage to do so. If turreting is more effective that aeroplane dogfight style, then people will do it. So yaw is nerfed to stop that from happening.

So basically because a few people decided to play those game 'wrong', we now have a situation where people who play these games are classed as having no skill even when they play the game the right way.

Seems slightly unfair if you ask me but then, this is the internet.

Actually the OP is now converted to our way of thinking so this thread should actually be closed. :D

Lol I'm not sure if I am converted as such, I still prefer the Star Citizen style of flight mode over Elite's, I just see both sides of the argument a lot more clearly.

They have skills, FPS skills not flying skills.

Big difference. ;)

Nah, its cool man, really. The developers in this game have tested a lot of different flight models and have decided to go with what we have currently. Its a design decision for this game, they really want to bring back the old elite game flight control scheme.

That doesn't mean a different approach is a priori worse or inferior, far from that. I think that many of us that backed ED and SC are happy that the games are actually going in a different direction regarding the flight system. It brings more variety after all...;)

One of the biggest achievements of Elite is that the ships feel big, like they have mass and inertia. They also feel fast, yet controllable.

Both are very important in a space game.
