Ringed stars?

I've seen them before, they're not very common but you do see them out in the black from time to time. There are ringed wW/ELw's as wel. (Some with my name on them)

So more common than I thought. It looked to be just another gas giant on the system map and I got very confused when I selected it and a star appeared on the holo-HUD and not a gas giant. Needed to scratch the itch again. Turned in my rare booze CG's, docked the Anaconda at Ray's and took off into the black. Think I'll stay out here a while. I'm finding loads of undiscovered stuff this time around.

So, why does it have a shaded area in the ring, if this is a star? Sense, this does not make.

Right, this assumption is. I was wondering myself.

I guess, it has to be a directional light, to get the planetary lighting right in the system. Or rings ar unlit objects and just assume, they must have a shadow zone. Either an engine problem or a procedural / performance thing - which does not make it look better though ;)

One other thought, is that the rings of such close proximity around any star wouldn't last, what with all their solar activity & mass ejections. Maybe these are smart rings, dodging reality....

They might be smart, but they are definitely cool. Diving into those rings give some impressive screenshots, regardless of their rude and ignorant behavior, when it comes to astrophysical laws.

Weird...haven't seen one in two years and now two in one week.

As to the shadow, I think I read somewhere that currently the game functions with only a single source of light. So even though it's graphically a star, it doesn't function as a light source, only the main star does.

Not common but there are some out there, if you want the paradise of ringed stars go to SKAUDE AA-H294 (I think that's it) it's 11KLy out but it's worth a trip with ringed white dwarfs and M class stars. And a few black holes

Is not the main star.

It could be the main star or the sixth star, that doesn't change the temperature of the star. You will only see rings past the ice line, which is the distance from the star where it is cool enough for free water to not be immediately vaporized.

Still would be cool to stumble across one of these in ED
