Roadmap after release

Hopefully they don't pull an "EVE Online" and make the mistake of not focusing on the core game first (spaceship combat, trade, exploration), before they start on too many other things. IMO they should flesh the current game out some, and bug-fix and polish it, then look at expanding features after.

Yeah, that's my hope too. Even though I want the fps stuff and planet landing and all the rest of it (basically I want it to be as complete a simulation of a space captain's life as possible with the tech we have), I wouldn't want that at the expense of efforts designed to improve and perfect what we have now (up to a point). But these guys are a brainy bunch, I don't think they're likely to make that stupid mistake, they will apportion their efforts intelligently, I'm sure, and as to the landing, fps, etc., we know they'd already been working on that concurrently, so it's got its own budgeting and no doubt will be ready when it's ready.

Some of the content I would hope would not even be that much work.

Fleshing out the mission structures so that when humans branch out into previous uninhabited systems we would get orbital scaffolds with lots of constriction deliveries missions with the platform getting fleshed out over z few months (same with expansion of existing stations or platforms. Other missions to protect it against rival factions trying to destroy it as well as missions TOo destroy it.

The same templates could be used for ship yard missions, the new existing ships have to be manufactured somewhere right, complete with convoys to deliver the ships with protect as well as destroy missions. This would also be a great way to introduce the new ship designs in the future, 1st the factory has to be built which could take a few months and then the new ships are seeded into the game at 1st they would be super rare with an order waiting list.

Also I would !like to see interdictions fleshed out, rather than it always being 1 ship and it being a simple run or fight decision based on the ship I would like to get ambushed now and then. 1 even elite sidewinder or eagle is a joke but 3 or 4 not so much!

My guess is trickle content as slow as possible while working on back end issues and Ai behavior.

I'm just now getting back from the Bahama's and I was kinda looking forward to some additions... But after simply googling the game I see its pretty much the opposite. Oh well, at least I got far cry during steam sale.

Now that the retail version of E D has been released does anyone know if Frontier have released a roadmap on what's next?

Mining needs a major overhaul and it would be nice to see some events ejected into the persistent universe, like major fleet battles on schedules that players can join...

So two questions, does anyone know the roadmap, and what would you like to see next?

What i would like to see next?

Maybe Ship-Transfer trough stations.... and selling ships you left somewhere in far away stations. Additionally public transportation.

In the long(er) run?

More life in the galaxy. Foreign Cultures at the other end of the galaxie, never seen or contacted before by humankind. Things like that. More dynamic, more life.

I'd like to be surprised, personally. This game already gets enough "Space Trucking Simulator 3300" jokes as is without bringing up a lack of roadmaps!

it´s my favourite place, the future is always cool, I´d freeze myself up in carbonite just to live there.

The future has rainbows and unicorns, and sugarpops and free beer for everyone

Wow, speaking of childish and immature comments...

It's the fan boys that make these forums what are otherwise a mature and non confrontational place to talk. Your reactions/behaviour to this is exactly the thing you justify for not releasing a roadmap. I've removed my comments that offended the fan boys so deeply.
Aah, the Internet Discussion Culture™. You got to love it. Point out a flaw in someone's argumentation, get immediately accused of "flaming" and being labeled as "childish", "immature" and "fanboy".

I don't know about cars and toasters…
And yet that didn't stop you from making a nonsensical blanket statement that covers not only all the businesses I mentioned, and toasters, but also your grocer, auto mechanic and plumber.

Microsoft… Adobe… AvePoint, Nintex, K2…
You know what all these have in common? They make applications for the professional sector on whose development can hinge investments of a couple of grands for their customers. Does this also apply to an entertainment product like Elite? Not so much.

You rightfully point out that there are also game developers that publish roadmaps, but these are the exception and not the rule. And I would also like to mention that both examples you've given are early access titles still trying to lure new customers to invest in their development with promises of shiny things to come.

I'm not suggesting a low level breakdown of upcoming functionality, just what are "we likely" to expect in the expansions we signed up for.
Then what's your problem? You pointed out yourself a video where the devs talk about things they want to implement in the future. And if you would have paid a bit more attention to what the devs have said prior and shortly after release you should have a general idea of what to expect for the near future, i.e. more or less the next 12 months, and roughly in this order:

  1. Wings
  2. Mac version
  3. 15 more flyable ships
  4. First-person walking/(shooting?)
  5. Planetary landings

Boom. There's your high level roadmap for the foreseeable future. Details and more new features will come in due time.

Other than that: how about first things first? The game has only been officially released three weeks ago. Before announcing any high-falluting future plans ED will (and should!) probably focus on fixing all the smaller problems first before putting substantial effort in new content.

That video is terrifying. The history of game development is filled with examples of devs not connecting with what it actually is that gamers liked about there product and then taking a successful game off in direction that alienates there fans. Zero G combat? How bout no.

There is so much potential in the space sim element of this game, none of the I wants covered anything that would deepen that aspect of the game.

They haven't and I suspect they won't given how some people round here react when they fail to deliver on what they've previously said. Better for them if they say nothing concrete.

We do know that wings/grouping is a priority and should happen early this year. They still have 15 ships to add. They've said mining is bare-bones right now so I expect there will be additions to that. Passenger transportation should happen at some point. Longer term they've talked about being able to get out of your ship and walk around stations (i.e. a FPS mode) and planetary landings. Those are both expected to be purchasable expansions.

Personally I'd most like to see the remaining ships, multiple saves, more depth/logic in the naval ranking progression, and passenger transportation missions.

Well said and in a nut shell! Rep inbound.

Frontier - please give us your road map

Elite has beautiful bones in place. The feeling of the ships is great, and the networking is starting to be in an acceptable place. The galaxy looks good, and supercruise gives us great access to the systems.

***

But the game itself is at a bare bones stage. NPCs are missing, the changes to the simulation are very hard to detect. We don't get much feedback for our actions, and it doesn't make a big difference in practice where we are flying. Sol system should be the playground for the rich and powerful, but it's rife with criminally insane NPCs, just like every place else.

It was a phenomenal effort to get the game out on the deadline you set. I appreciate and applaud the accomplishment. Problem is though, that the reputation of the game is fast being made now, and at the moment it's all promise and little delivery. On the actual, gripping gameplay front. The features that make us care about the simulated galaxy, the NPCs, the repercusion for our actions. All of that is still missing.

So please tell us what happens next. What features are coming, what is being worked on right now, and in what order. Keep the information and updates coming, keep people engaged and involved.

Elite has incredible potential. Do not waste this opportunity

Hardly likely a company with give you an NDA roadmap of it's flagship product.

Some hints and desires maybe, but not the roadmap.

Apart from the company point of view, imagine the uproar on the forums if they were 1 second late with anything or it was to the exact letter of everyones understanding of they personally thought it meant.

Not going to happen, bullet points of desires maybe, but that is all

I think a very rough, non-contractually obliging roadmap with suitably vague deadlines would be better than nothing. But I guess it would get torn apart on these forums, no matter how they did it...

I agree with Adept on this. The game is great. Still a little bare in some areas. And keeping your players in the loop to some entent is always a good idea. It lets us know what to look forward to and SOME idea of when. I, as well as others, would greatly appreciate this. Thank you for your time, your effort and a game I've waited many, many years for. :D
