I voted bullets for reliability but then I remembered they don't work in vacuum so lasers I guess.

That would be easily fixed. Just change the propellant to a system that provides its own oxidation or hell just make it a mini rail gun.

Additional safety tip. You absolutely don't want to fire that bad boy in a zero G environment. (unless adequately secured).

Voted both, but recoil is still a slug gun issue even using a mag rail system. For energy weapons, we could maybe branch out pass lasers into plasma? My commander is going to carry gyro jet! Low recoil and max boom!

Little bit of a different one today.

A few weeks ago I posted a lore question on DD about wether sidearms in Elite are lasers or bullets.

I got a response from none other than Mr. Drew Wager himself, so I can be 100% that both weapons exist in the Elite universe.

Drew told me that basically, laser pistols are more common in wealthier parts of society, whilst traditional bullet-firing weapons are more common in poorer places.

With this knowledge, I wanted to pose a roleplay question. Which type of projectile do you see your CMDR-self using? And why?

There will be a poll shortly.

I would like to use both: lasers, pistols, even revolvers .

Most important thing is that the weapons are well designed, have good solid beefy sounds and feel like they pack a punch.
Some games are very good at this, like for example Splintercell, or Far Cry 2 and 3, or The Division.
These are all Ubisoft games, I don't know if this is a coincidence, or perhaps they are just good at this stuff.

The revolvers in Watch Dogs, inspired by the Chiappa Rhino are the most satisfying handguns I ever fired in a game. Simply magnificent.
The worst and most uninteresting weapons I recently used in a game are those in Deus Ex Mankind Divided.

I hope FD has a good look at how others do it.

I also would like melee weapons: knives, daggers, even swords.
And also all kinds of non-lethal weaponry.
And something evil like a garotte would be cool too.

I'd like to be able to become a collector and have a cool weapons cabinet or armory on board of my Anaconda.

Due to constraints I would say a reliable laser pistol would be hard to find , power packs fade after use, focus lenses getting cracked ect so I will say reliable .45 pistol 10 round magazine, with a 5 shot stubby in my ankle holster

She would totally the future equivalent of a 1911. She's kinda thrifty unless it has to do with her Cobra. Plus, in a pinch she could use it for propulsion to get back to her ship Cowboy Bebop style ; )

Laser, no moving parts! Stove pipe that!
laser, recharged by ships power plant! No extra ammo to carry!
focus laser made out of the same alloy as my pythons canopy, oh wait......

still have to carry a spare charge pack I would say if you look at most lasers in Sci-fi games have a 20 or so shot count before the battery is dead others have a shot count until it's over heated (Star Wars BF) and you forget the power of a slide coming back and ejecting a round is sexy as all hell a laser just won't cut it in the oooo sexy department

Definitely bullets. Nothing puts a grin on your face better than the recoil and more importantly the noise of firing a round.
Where is the fun in zero recoil and the little pew pew of a lazer?

Hell if I could get away with it, give me a bolter!

<evil grin> :-D

Depends where I am. If I am heading towards the poorer places, swanning about with a Laser Weapon is likely to draw unwanted attention. So bullets for them down there.

However when rubbing shoulders with the wealthy, you need to look the part so Laser Weapon when in the richer zones

Now this CMDR has the right idea.

Ahhh, I see. This CMDR fancies the 1%ers. Keep rubbing shoulders with the likes of them and that crap smell might start to stick.

I'll stick with the working class and downtrodden.

If I had to venture a guess, I would say that a lot of the ground combat will be reminiscent of the ship combat. Which I think will be a great idea. You can have a personal shield, but within a certain distance you'll appear on everyone's radar, whereas if you forego a shield, you'd appear to be in a 'vague' direction on the map.
I also imagine things like plasma accelerators and rail guns will be heavy weapons.
When it comes to basic lasers and bullets for primary weapons, I think lasers will forsake ammunition for a 'cool down' sort of reload and bullets will be more powerful but will have a limited capacity. I'd probably go with like a laser sniper and a conventional bullet assault rifle. If there is a limit to the weapon size, I'd probably still go with a standard AR for my main and like a laser pistol as a sidearm just so I always have a weapon.

I also hope they have weapon engineers! Maybe not immediately at launch, but eventually as part of the game. Although, I'd much prefer it not to be an RNG thing. I think standard attachments would be ideal. High capacity mag attachment vs quick reload. Scope vs hip fire laser. Recoil reducer vs more powerful barrel. Slower, stronger receiver, vs high RPM automatic receiver. Like, make it so every base gun is competitive with every other gun (in the same category that is) and then just let players customize them to their preference.

Lasers. I'll keep a 1911 in the drawer, but I dont need recoil and force in zero G environments. Never know if a ship or station might malfunction in a firefight.

I think combat would be much more fun without personal radars/motion sensors. Allows for more 'tactical' approaches, and less run'n'gun slaughter fests that most FPS games are. I agree with most of your points though
(This is all just my opinions)

What can I say, I just can't give up my laspistol and chainsword.

A TP-82 to help fend off wild animals when my spaceship crash lands on some remote planet.

But when I'm inside a spaceship I'd rather have something that just burns through flesh instead of ships' hulls.
