Proposal Discussion Roleplaying

What features would you like to see implemented to support roleplay?

For example would you like structured missions for your role, how would they work, what would be the reward, could they be done in a co-op fashion...
What other instances might happen that are not supported by the game but could happen?
Could joining a in-game Guild/Faction/Military replace the possible need for player created clans?

This thread is not intended to discuss whether roleplay should exist, but for those that would like to do it!

Features for roles (General):-

Factions/Guilds provide access to better/specialist equipment/ships (at a cost) as you gain rank
Bases which only give landing clearance to members of the guild
Once you've gained enough rank you could give orders to nearby NPC friendlies
Co-Op Missions
Higher ranking members could create missions for other players
Anyone can pursue whatever activities they like freelance, however, to make the most of this career, they need to join a guild/faction
Players would have to meet various requirements to progress in a faction to gain access to better missions and benefits
Significant progress in one faction would make progress in an opposing guild much harder
Team missions - groups formed to supply a large contract - build space station etc

I like the idea of guilds such as trading, explorer's, and bounty hunter guilds. There could also be other groups such as the Federation and Imperial militaries, maybe even the various police forces.

Missions will be only visible if you have the requisite ranking. Some missions could be specifically co-op, the mission board could state that x people are required for a mission, and not start until the requisite number have joined.

For rewards, other than cash, you might gain access to guild stores which have equipment, and maybe even ships only available through them. For example, the explorer's guild may have long range scanners, while bounty hunters and militaries might have access to military grade weapons.

You could also have bases which only give landing clearance to members of the guild, and perhaps once you've gained enough rank you could give orders to nearby NPC friendlies.

Both nice ideas

I mentioned in another thread that I have a long history of tabletop roleplaying under my belt.

I hope for the day that a multiplayer game comes along where roleplaying and immersion go hand in hand to replicate that tabletop gaming experience online.

Sadly without dedicated 'roleplaying' servers populated with people who want the same experience it will be a hard thing to achieve.

In terms of what I'd like to see, then effective use of the more social aspects of the game such as ship to ship comms, npc interaction and linked missions that all help to keep you immersed in the Elite universe.

:D Mmmmm Geek-gasm!

Where as WoW is heavily structured, which is why they have to have dedicated RP servers... Elite, I feel will have much more freedom, so will not have to be so reliant on players that have the preset idea they want to roleplay.

They can leave alone if they like, but they might just find themselves enjoying it!

In an extreme case anyone can start their own group if they are really anti RP, but personally I wouldn't want anyone to feel forced into it and I would respect anyone who says "look leave me alone, I don't want to RP" as long as they haven't decide to abandon it because it isn't going their way!

Or the military !

I think the military RP is pretty much covered within the game already, or at least is was with FE2 and FFE...

RP in this context is providing content for players, who want a different career... previous games let you do it, but it wasn't really supported

I agree regarding guilds. My biggest frustration with Frontier was the lack of variety in missions. If you joined the military, you had assassination, courier, bombing or photograph missions. That's it! With a guild there would likely be more variety and the possibility of linking tasks into a bigger mission.

I accept that the game is meant to be played over a period of time but look at the stats. Assuming all missions were available to you, you'd need to complete over 1000 photograph missions perfectly to attain the Admiral/Prince rank. That would simply drive you bonkers over time.

Also, there weren't any real perks for attaining rank. I'd hope that when you attain ranks, you'll be able to access more military-controlled systems allowing you better trade routes, etc. Conversely, the opposing navy's systems would become much harder the higher the rank you attain. Also, get access to better military-grade hardware.

This wouldn't just apply to the military, there could be pirate guilds. Trade guilds. Civilian constabulary guilds. Mercenary guilds (albeit a contradiction in terms). Assassin guilds. The possibilities are staggering!

Would love to see far flung and remote science outposts for the Explorers. Limited supplies but with NPCs handing out scientific missions.

  • Send a probe to planet x
  • Investigate anomaly at co-ordinates #####
  • Pick up scientists and their 'cargo' from xxxx
  • Mine asteroid xxx for mineral xxx and return for research
  • Rescue science ship xxx which is being slowly pulled into star xxx
  • take readings from neblua x, pulsar x, star x etc....

Again, linking missions will keep you immersed, who's to say that some discovery of one of the above doesn't have repercussions back towards the core worlds.

I'd quite like to be a griefer. Can that be a role? Someone who is quite powerful and attacks people near space stations who are trying to trade or dock, with a special hyperspace engine that still works if surrounded by police. I've no interest in their cargo, I just like blowing things up.

Maybe even multiple guilds of the same type. For example two mercenary guilds - one with a strict code of honour, taking on above board missions, helping the helpless and otherwise helping old ladies cross the street etc, the other being the cutthroat band of murderers - taking any mission that pays. That way you could even roleplay a good or bad guy.

Roleplay as in stuff to do for Bounty Hunters, Pirates, Traders etc.

Absolutely.

I'd be very disappointed if we were lumped into a Pilot role and everything else was in our heads with no support from the game mechanics. I'd consider that ED was missing out on a lot of content options too.

Roleplaying as in what we might engage in once we have EVA, that's down to the individual. I'd expect that buying different outfits and RP assist items would crop up (flowers, musical instruments etc.) so we don't all look like copies (that'd be bland). But the activity itself is optional.

Scientist

Archeologist/Collector (Dependant on if we can find alien ruins/artifacts)

Engineer/Medic/Rescue (Providing support and aid to striken craft, like a Galaxy AA ;))

Corporate Hitman/fixer

Smuggler
