Route plotter not working for economical routes

I did not notice this until today, because I was always in a hurry, using the "Fastest routes" setting.

Today I wanted to start exploring a region of space, but the "Economical routes" never provide any route, it just gets stuck in the last segment of that progress bar and nothing happens.

I thought it is some setting in map mode, but no matter how many star types I exclude or include, it never finds a route:

I'm in one of the densest regions of the galaxy, yet no chance to find an economical route...

Any advice?

Thank you!

PS: One more problem - after I changed my graphics card, my mouse keeps getting out of the window and when I click (for example in FSS), it "unfocuses" Elite and my controls stop working... Any idea how this behavior may start with graphics card change?

Yes... you've done changed alot of settings in the galmap namely search criteria.... THEN selected economical routes. Now leave the galmap go back into it and check its still on economy. If it is your all good

Could you be more specific?

What exactly do you think I have changed, that is preventing the route plotter from plotting a course?

BTW, Fastest Route is working just fine...

And I did what you said: left the GalMap and went right back and the "Economical Route" was unchecked...

I did reset all the filters by clicking the "Toggle all" button. Tried to plot a route to a system that is 179ly away... Nothing...

Guys, I have been playing ED for one and a half years now. I really do not know what am I doing wrong here. Please watch the video below and tell me where you see the mistakes I do. Your help is greatly appreciated:

EDIT: I suggest you play it at 2x speed...

EDIT: the video was recorded in 720p. For some reason, YT downgraded it to 360p. But you can still see what I'm doing there... I suggest you play it at 2x speed...

Welcome to the fun of the Odyssey galmap, a mini-game all on it's own!

So, a few things. Try not to change lots of things in one galmap visit - don't keep toggling things on off needlessly, or if you do then quit out of galmap and go back in. It also behaves odd with neutrons, and can be hard to convince it to use - or not use - them. Oh, and some (but not all) the filters do not tick the "apply to route" tickbox - if you change star types, for example, make sure you re-tick that "apply to route" checkbox.
So, get whatever filter you want to use setup properly, then tick fastest route and hit recalculate route. Now, tick jet-cone boost and hit recalculate. Now untick jet-cone again and hit recalculate. Finally, tick economical and hit recalculate. If it still insists to either break, or offer a neutron jump as first hop - just move system to a non-neutron system and retry.

Thanks, MattG. I noticed a lot of strange behavior over time with Odyssey. I was playing in Odyssey for over 6 months or so... I traveled around half of the Galaxy with Odyssey, did thousands of jumps. I noticed exactly what you describe:
  • the filters get disabled randomly
  • using of a jet cone boost gets disabled randomly
  • the route would stop working randomly in the middle of a trip because the jump is 1ly longer than my actual jump range
  • and probably other fups
But I have never actually tried using economical, as I was OK with fastest.

Now, what do I do to reset everything, so that it would try to plot a route for the first time, with no interference from filters?

As I try to do the steps you guys here suggest, I always restart the game, enter GalMap and without fiddling with anything, the route plotting for the economical route will fail...

What you can see in the video: I manage to plot economic routes for systems that are in the direct vicinity (blue connected lines). But when I get over this threshold, it will fail immediately...

So I started ED again and did this:
  1. jumped out of the current system just to reset the plotter
  2. opened GalMap and found a nearby system (59ly distant system in a heavily dense area - a lot of stars to use to get there)
  3. pressed "Plot a route" button - NOTHING - no route available
  4. opened Route settings to discover, than none of the options is checked: not Economical, not Fastest, no Jet cone boost... Nothing
  5. Checked "economical" and clicked the "Plot a route" button again - same result - NOTHING - no route available
  6. Checked "Fastest" - route plotted IMMEDIATELY
  7. Checked "Use Jet cone" - route plotted IMMEDIATELY
  8. Checked "Economical" - No route available
  9. Exited GalMap and returned back to it
  10. Tried again plotting economical - Nothing
  11. Now the GalMap even shows a blue connecting line, indicating, that the route plotter knows how to get there
  12. But when I hit Plot a route - I get "Route not available"
And I was not even changing any filters etc... Everything is basically in default mode...

Quick note - don't quit the game and reload. Just quitting galmap and re-entering it is enough to "reset" it, per se. Quitting the game will leave the filters you've set alone (or should do!), but will reset the state of how the plotter works (or "works"). When you enter the game it'll be in a default state which is sort-of fastest with boosts (but don't rely on it too much). So once you get it working, the next time you load the game up the plotter will probably be in it's default state - at that point you should do the Fastest->RePlot->Jet Cone->RePlot->No JetCone->Replot->Ecnomical->RePlot dance. The idea being this way should explicitly turn off neutron jumps which I think are part of the problem here - I think they're on by default, but to turn them off you have to explicitly turn them on... and then off.

In your last reply, between 7 and 8 did you turn OFF jet cone boost?

I think that gets unchecked automatically once you select Economical...

But you can see that even the simplest trip, with completely fresh GalMap is impossible...

For someone who traveled around the galaxy, already did thousands upon thousands of jumps, travelled over 500.000ly, the route plotting should be fairly easy task...

Not so much with Odyssey GalMap and Economical setting...

It probably does auto-uncheck when you select Economical - but that's not what we want to happen. We want to convince the plotter that we've actually explicitly turned off jet cone boosting. I'd definitely turn it off whilst on fastest routes and hit replot before selecting economical.

Also, completely fresh galmap after starting the game is not what you want, we want to explicitly prime it with what we want to do, don't rely on "frsh" or "default".

But you're right, it's a ridiculous dance for something that ought to be (and once was!) trivial. Just one of the 100s of needless "improvements".

There is also 1 more thing you can try. You mentioned changing your graphics card. Everything in galmap is computed by your graphics card - perhaps it's holding on to something of the old card ? This is a long shot, but what have you got to lose?
The graphics settings are kept in C: \ Users \ your user \ AppData \ Local \ Frontier Developments \ Elite Dangerous \ Options \ Graphics
Close the game, back up the contents of this folder and then delete the contents. Restart the game, and re-set your graphics options. After that, retry route plotting. You might still have a bit of a dance to do, but mayeb less?

Sounds like the route plotter is having trouble doing the economical route when there is such a dense starfield. I'd submit a bug report on it.

I tried plotting a long economical route some days ago too (was searching for a bug in another program) and couldn't do it. It failed every time I plotted towards the core (that commander is about 3000 lys from SagA* ) but it had no problem when I tried to plot tangential to the core. So yeah, I guess it has problems with the densest region.

That's what I assumed it was. Plotting even a short distance with economical plotting in the core (or other dense area) gives the ol' algorithm a huge amount of work to do because it's trying to include as many jumps as possible, rather than as few as possible. And in dense areas, that can be a lot of jumps.

When I tried to plot a route to a star within 1 jump range, it failed as well...
I will try in Horizons again when I get home on Thursday...
Thanks, everyone!

I had a similar problem with the neutron routing being stuck "on". Basically I couldn't use economic plotting until I set it back to fastest, toggled the neutron routing on/off again, and then set it back to economical, and then it worked.

Today again no luck... No economicall route plotting, until - until I remved Non-sequence stars from the filter... Then it plotted economical route immediately...

Will investigate tomorrow whether it is a solution or just a coincidence...

Confirmed: it is NOT because of the non sequence stars... I added them back, still plotted... Added WD... Plotted... Added Carbon stars, plotted...

I have no idea what was causing that problem... It is now working with no issues whatsoever...
