Newcomer / Intro route plotting failed?

hi,

so I did a little travelling today. at first I went to the horse head nebula, was around 1000ly, everything went well.
then I wanted to go the seagull nebula. it tried to plot the route but after ~20% it stopped and said route plotting failed.
then I tried monkey head nebula. same thing, plotted a few % and then failed.
rosette nebula, same thing.

anyone knows what is going on? I have enough fuel and have a 56ly jumprange.

You are trying to plot through restricted areas, fly a long way towards the top of the galaxy then plot a course to directly above your desired destination, then drop down to them. The route plotter can only do so many degrees of variation from the direct path so if you are close to a restricted area and trying to plot to a destiantion on the far side of the area it won't be able to plot a path.

Another possibility is that your galmap may be filtering out certain star types so make sure all star types are visible before plotting to give the route plotter max possibilities for routing

There's a massive no-go zone down in that region. I had to go a long way west from there - IIRC, until I was west of the vertical line through Sol - before I could get a route back to civilisation

that wasnt it, I have checked that

so are these nebula also no go zones?

The no go zones are well detailed in maps, there are stations in that area, most nebula are accessible by just working your way around the zones. Here is a detailed location list of the zones;

Here is a video showing the layout and overlapping areas at different levels of the galaxy, as you can see you fly over most of them, they don't extend all the way to the galactic edge.

Good luck, and while they seem impassable to first time visitors they aren't that hard to get around if you use your galmap and plot your route along the edges of the regions.

A ship flying into the Orion-Barnards Loop region can be a bit like a fly trapped in an old-fashioned glass flytrap - getting in is easy, getting out again by any route other than the way you came in is tricky. Retracing your route back towards the Bubble is one way out. In a ship with a high enough jump range, you can "punch through" where the wall is thinnest.

The video-map varonica linked to above is now out of date; the little Cone Sector bubble buried deep inside the larger NGC 2264 region is now permit-locked as well. For a history of this, see the Gnosis story.

I suspected as much, but it does give an idea of how the system works, they are overlapping spheres and it's easily possible to fly over or under them, I have done it quite a number of times.

When I flew into one of those flytrap type areas I made sure I bookmarked a couple of systems in the mouth of the trap and labelled them clearly so I would be able to find my way out quickly.

Another way of getting out is to choose somewhere you can route to at approximately right-angles to were you want to go - and every few jumps check if you can now route to where you want to go. Once you clear the permit locked area you can re-route back to your original target.

Ah don't need that, just turn visited stars on and unvisited stars off and fly back along your own course, that will get you out every time.
