Newcomer / Intro Route un attainable?

I am a newbie on my second mission. Selected a mission then went to travel to system to unload cargo. The system route
in the Galaxy map says the route is unattainable. What does this mean for me, do I have to abandon the mission, and why
would it be unattainable? I guess in future i need to check routes b4 excepting a mission, lesson:rolleyes: learned.

It means that somewhere between your origin and destination there is a hyperspace jump required that is further than your maximum jump range. You will need to upgrade your FSD or reduce your total weight in order to plot a course to that destination. If you aren't going to be able to increase your jump range before the mission times out then you might as well abandon it, yes.

ED does not filter missions by your ability to complete them (beyond ensuring you have the cargo space available to carry cargo required by the mission), so doing a little bit of research before accepting a mission would be wise. On that note: if a mission requires you to deliver cargo then while checking that you can plot the course use the weight slider on the galaxy map so that it calculates the route as if you were carrying said cargo. Carrying cargo reduces your max jump range, so this is a common cause of difficulty for newer players.

All is clear. Didn't know this but the weight slider sounds light a good investment in my time to check out. Many thanks!

Probably the weight of the cargo has pushed your jump distance too low. It is always best to check that a route is possible in your current ship before accepting a bulletin board mission.

If you abandon the mission you will take a reputation hit with the faction that gave it to you but not too bad. You may still be able to sell the cargo somewhere but, iirc it will now be technically stolen so you will have to find a black market.

Unless you by any chance set your destination before accepting the mission? This can also throw out the jump calculation.

It turned out to be weight, too much for the sidewinder. I'll use the weight calculator on the Galaxy Map from now on. Thanks for the assistance.
This game has a steep learning curve, it is what makes it worth while, otherwise I would stick with checkers :D
