Rumours about having to pay for an "Expansion pass"?

Must agree - all major expansions will have a charge to them - just like every other MMO game major expansion. This was declared right upfront and part of the lure of being an early backer was never having to pay for any expansions...

Yup spot on. The reason I paid £100 for the premium Beta wasn't just to play the game early, but because it included all future expansions.

Lol, sorry Sokonomi, don't think we can muster much sympathy for this one :)

Kudos, though, for retaining a pretty civil and reasoned (if a little miffed) tone in your responses!

Hope you feel you get your money's worth as time goes on.

I paid for the PB and the lifetime expansion pass, £85 I think it was. I did it because I had the money available then. In the future? Who knows.

I have zero interest regarding walking around a ship or a planet. I have zero interest in FPS gameplay on a planet. I have zero interest in
boarding other ships. In fact I will stay in my pilot's seat for the entire duration. I quite like the idea of flying over a planet's surface though,
maybe doing photographic or bombing missions like in EF. We'll see what the expansions bring.

I still think I made a good decision for my £85. So far I've been testing for 340 hours. So my hourly cost is 25 pence so far.

Strikes me as a bit of a bargain tbh and it's only going to get better (cost wise).

To the OP, sorry for you but there's nothing I can say, that hasn't been said already.

The 60 euro you paid for beta gets you the launch game, anything added after that costs extra,
as they will be considered expansions.

This is not strictly true. There will be content added to the core game after release without new charges. Hopefully quite a bit of new content. What will cost extra are expansions. Frankly I would only consider Elite expensive compared to other games if I had bought into alpha or premium beta.

I am happy to pay for any DLC that can complement the game.
The only issue is that in a MMO, one cannot addup easily.
planet landing and base fps visits I can see.
but what about targoids ? comets ? galactic clutters ? satelittes ? star fleet. You cannot have 50% of the players seeing something and not the rest... that will limit the possibilities of extension.

I bought the £35 expansions pass from the store separately when it was on offer. I weighed up before hand the pros and cons of paying £35. And as Tinman has mentioned and DB at times, that the games engine will update in line with new emerging 3d graphics trends, there will be expansions and all sorts of future updates. A small price to pay I thought for a game that's going to have a long life cycle.

I've not installed the game yet, and might not for another year or so until we see the first major expansions start to drop. Plus my gpu has blown so I'm not able to game full stop for a good while.

This is interesting. I think (hope) that regardless of expansions the core game will have matured a lot in that time. I see the 16th as the minimum build and it will be great to see where it is 1 year down the road.

I just heard an ugly rumour about the possible existence of an expansion pass down the line.

Paraphrasing;
You are to buy an expansion pass in order to be able to land on planets, have FPS fights, etz..
The 60 euro you paid for beta gets you the launch game, anything added after that costs extra,
as they will be considered expansions.

Just how much of this is true? :(
If this doesn't turn out to be complete bullpucky, I'll drop the game right now and cut my loss..
I'm having a hard time believing it though, it would be a bad PR move to ask even more money for an already expensive game.

Please provide the link/source of the rumour.

<paraphrase> "I see entitlement. Everywhere!" </paraphrase>

I bought into Premium Beta.

I also bought the Mercenary Edition, and when the Lifetime Expansion Pass became available, almost shouted "Shut up and take my money!" <---- those two are for my son's upcoming 13th birthday on New Year's Eve.

The OP's complaints are unjustifiable - the offers were there for the taking - they were clearly advertised when made available, and just as clearly advertised as being a limited offer. Once they were gone, they were gone.

If the OP didn't see those offers in time, or didn't buy into them - then tough. I didn't see the Kickstarter in time - I'm kicking myself about that, but I'm not whining about it. The Premium Beta purchase (and the purchases for my son) have mostly made up for missing the KS.

So OP, you missed the opportunity, or you chose not to take up the offer when it was available? I'm guessing the former. Regardless, you'll just have to take this one on the chin, like we all have to do when chances are missed or mistakes are made in real life.

You'll get over it - we all do. We all have to.
