Rumours about having to pay for an "Expansion pass"?

Paying more for beta is not so unusual. Prison Architect did the same. The idea is to keep the idiots out and instead have dedicated beta players that give constructive feedback. Doesn't always work.

That´s actually not true.
According to the announcements "normal players" can get access to Sol if the have a rather high standing within the Federation (whereas Beta-Backers gain access to Sol from the beginning on)

I didn't say that "normal players" will never get access to sol, i said that beta player will have this access "regardless of faction standing".

Oh, another bonus for the beta backers: they can't loose this permit. "Normal players" can loose it if their faction standing drops too low.

I just think its unusual for a beta to cost more than retail is all.
Other beta/early access games offer you a discount in return for your help hunting for bugs.
Would have been nice if frontier said "You were here for the start, you can stay till the end".
But I guess we'll see just how much we get for 60 euros when release time comes.

Frontier did say that to everyone who bought into Premium, and to everyone that bought the lifetime expansion. There was no obscure language involved making that difficult to understand. I hadn't heard of the development while it was in Kickstarter but was thrilled to see that I could buy in at Premium Beta which clearly listed the perks for doing so and what would not be available later if I chose not to. Until very recently most games didn't bother having an open beta at all. Now things are flipped 180° and some games never really leave beta.

Star Citizen have made capital ships available at the bargain price of $2500 each. Limited numbers though, so don't wait!!

What? No-one rushing to the exit? How odd.....

What's scary is they'll all sell. I don't really know what the fascination is with dropping that much cash on a such things. I bought my little 325a, but want something to work for in-game later.

I just heard an ugly rumour about the possible existence of an expansion pass down the line.

Paraphrasing;
You are to buy an expansion pass in order to be able to land on planets, have FPS fights, etz..
The 60 euro you paid for beta gets you the launch game, anything added after that costs extra,
as they will be considered expansions.

Just how much of this is true? :(
If this doesn't turn out to be complete bullpucky, I'll drop the game right now and cut my loss..
I'm having a hard time believing it though, it would be a bad PR move to ask even more money for an already expensive game.

This I considered common knowledge to be honest. There was a Lifetime Expansion Pass available in the shop for a limited time. I bought it when I bought the game. This Expansion Pass is no longer available.

The more fundamental large expansions, like planetary landings, walking around ships and true FPA will have to be paid for seperately.
I think that is perfectly reasonable. This is such a huge game. In fact it is more like multiple games in one, if they can pull it off.

The development of that stuff will have to be paid for and considering the quality FD is delivering it is more than worth it.

"Pay for major expansions for a game that is planned to continuously be developed and improved upon over many years to come with entirely new gameplay mechanics and environments!? Ridiculous!!!"

"Pay for NHL/FIFA 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15? Sure!"

"Pay for Assassins Creed 42. Absolutely!"

Hmmm...

Would it be better if the each year put out a "new game" instead?

Some of us have already paid for the Seasons Pass so umm yes it's true. I just bought the Seasons pass for Destiny and it was 35 bucks also. Why would you not want more content if you already bought the game and like it? The only reason the game does not have these features yet is because it would take another year or two to develop for them. They need to get the core game out and working right before trying to move to more advanced features like planetfall and first person stations etc.

yup true, unless you backed at £200 alpha level (meeeee) or bought the expansion pass while it was in the store (for KS backers who hadn't back at a high enough level i'm guessing).
remember E: D isnt a subscription game, they need to continue to make money to continue development.
as i recall their were 2 expansions for definate, one has planetary landings unsure what the other is.

anyway WoW charges sub AND charges for expansions so this is hardly so this is hardly unprecedented in online gaming.

edit:
yeah duh, 2nd expansion would be the first person walk around ship/station/(planet as well maybe? star wars galaxies anyone!)
hmm walking on planets, now that has got me a bit excited, walk on ship = meh. walk on station =also meh (just look how unpopular it turned out to be in EVE). maybe the ability to comb ruins for alien artifacts. hmm

It's a wonderful PR move.

1. You don't have to buy it. If you like the game wholly from space, continue playing in space. Some people actually don't give a monkey's about landing on planets - nobody's forcing you to.

2. It will look amazing, and will generate heaps of publicity and interest after the year or two (or three? ;)) it takes to develop.

3. Additional income will pay for ongoing enhancements.

4. Did I mention it will look amazing? :)

Ditto for the proposed "getting up out of your chair", "getting out of your ship" expansion.

Feel free to be outraged... but you probably won't have a lot of company as you do it.

We'll still be here once you're done! :D

Actually...anyone who pledged £80 or more during the Kickstarter will get all future expansions for free. :)

Planetary landing and FPS shouldn't BE an expansion, that all should be part of the core of the game (even if it gets added later).
If the core game is just a bare bones space sim with nothing really special going on, id just stick with egosofts X games.
60 euros is a lot for what it is now. Other space sims cost less and have a ton more going on.
If its going to cost 90 euros to get a game that excels above others, its getting a bit steep.

Beats me, but you can ask Arenanet how they do it.
People seem to keep hammering on subscription being more expensive, but there are plenty games that make due without it.
Guild Wars 2 has been free of subscriptions and expansions since the start over 2 years ago, and its been getting new content monthly.
So a pay-once game without subscriptions or expansion crud certainly belongs in the realm of possibilities.

Right from the start even Kickstarter they said that planetary landings and FPS would be paid for expansion, if you had read what you were buying first then you would know that.

Hi Sokonomi :),
each of the major expansions (planetary landings etc) will take huuuge investments in time and money to implement (probably a year or more each to get them right), so it makes sense that they cost extra. This expansion DLC would be similar to The Shivering Isles or Knights of the Nine for Morrowind, Dragonborn for Skyrim, Reaper of Souls for Diablo III, or The Ballad of Gay Tony / The Lost and the Damned for GTA IV.

Guild Wars 2 has an economy based on microtransactions, where you can buy temporary character buffs or exchange cash for in-game currency and items. There are no such pay-to-win transactions planned for ED as far as I am aware, as FD polled the community and only cosmetic microtransactions were favoured.

You only have to pay once for ED if that's what you want; however, you would miss out on what are essentially new games built into the ED galaxy

No-one's asking you to buy ED if you don't think you would enjoy it or would prefer to play something else :)

I bought the £35 expansions pass from the store separately when it was on offer. I weighed up before hand the pros and cons of paying £35. And as Tinman has mentioned and DB at times, that the games engine will update in line with new emerging 3d graphics trends, there will be expansions and all sorts of future updates. A small price to pay I thought for a game that's going to have a long life cycle.

I've not installed the game yet, and might not for another year or so until we see the first major expansions start to drop. Plus my gpu has blown so I'm not able to game full stop for a good while.

This has been hugely advertised from day 1. sorry :(

on the bright side, it means it will be a (hopefully) "proper" piece of content rather than a cruddy DLC.

They have to charge extra for the DLC really given some of us have already paid in advance for it.

I paid it expecting to be treated like a VIP because I backed them before seeing the results.
Instead, It turns out I can just get in line like everybody else who comes in after the release,
just to get in on all those fancy promises that have been made. That is a bum deal.

I would start reading into what you buy before you actually buy it, or there will be a lot of disappointments in the future...
