Running Two Accounts (Two copies of the game)

Hey all,

I'm planning to pick up and extra copy of ED from the Epic store come the 19th as it's FREE.

I understand of course I'll be creating a new Account and Commander with FDev - I assume I'll be going through their launcher still. However, does this need to be via a different Email address or can one Email address cope with more than one account? I can of course sign up with a different Email address, though ideally I'd just use my standard one with a different Commander name.

Just trying to anticipate any issues and I know several people here already run more than one account, so thought I'd ask for advice in case there's anything in particular I need to be mindful of.

I'm hoping it's going to be a simple case of create an Epic Game Store account, "buy" the game and access it in the usual way. I've always accessed my current copy through the standard Frontier Launcher - never done it through Steam, though I understand we could claim a free Steam Key at one point - I never did.

Scoob.

Since probably few, if any, people have tested running ED through an Epic account, there's little accumulated wisdom on that. My best guess would be that you'll need a different email address, same as with Steam or Frontier directly, as that is all that keeps your separate CMDRs separate.

But since it's free, why don't you try it and report? Worst case, your existing CMDR on that email address might be reset 😁.

Ok, more realistically, you won't be able to link the Epic account with FD, as that email is already in use.

How do I make it work as a second account please?
I bought my original copy of elite through the Frontier store and use the same email for Epic and Frontier.
You may have to create a separate Epic account on another email address if the two are linked.

You'll almost definitely need a separate email address. However, that doesn't necessarily have to be a separate email account. Most email providers support so-called "plus addressing". E.g. see here: https://www.wikihow.com/Use-Plus-Addressing-in-Gmail

Short version: I have a single email address, let's say CMDRCool@gmail. For the Frontier store I used CMDRCool+fdev@gmail, while for Steam I used CMDRCool+steam@gmail - they go to the same inbox and use the same login, but appear as distinct email addresses for the purposes of using other services. Maybe I'll sign up for the Epic store with CMDRCool+epic@gmail when the sale starts.

What I'd really like to know, once some guinea pigs have jumped in, is whether you can share the same ED installation between the Epic and Steam-managed launchers. It's hard to say no to a free additional alt, but if it means an entire parallel installation of the game on my computer, I might not bother.

I have already tried making additional Epic store accounts in anticipation and it detects both '+' and '.' in the email addresses and rejects them, so the only option seems to be an entire new email for each account you plan on opening.

Ah, a pity that. The odds that "free" ends up being too expensive to entice me into the Epic ecosystem just keep going up!

I did wonder if this version of ED would require it be launched via whatever Epic app there is. I've zero experience with the Epic Store so I don't know. Do players who bought ED on Steam launch it via Steam, or do they use the Frontier Launcher?

I got a second account a couple of weeks ago. I ponied up £20 and bought it direct from FD store. I have no issues with paying sensible money for good software, especially as it costs about the same as a trip to the cinema to watch a rubbish film surrounded by the phone-twiddling, hamburger-munching general public.

I grabbed an alt for 5 bucks on steam and needed a seperate email for it, just launch it on the laptop then minimize the whole thing - extra pip in multicrew yay

Steam users use Steam to launch. Epic has it's own launcher, as does EA (Origin) and Ubisoft (UPlay). I can't think of more off the top of my head but there could be others. Some games will link to different launchers to execute which can be a bit painful (thinking Ubisoft), I don't think ED will do that.

You need to download the Epic launcher if you want do download the software. However, you can still access your account via the web and even "purchase" the game for free without installing anything yet. As long as you do the purchase in that week you won't have to pay for it being added to your account.

But, if you have the same email linked to Epic and Frontier, then in theory you could just change the email address for Epic without the need to create additional account (if that would not cause other problems for you). As far as I know you can change email adress once every 3 months there. With Maolagin advice you don't even need new email account for that, just new address.

Is that a recent change? I've been playing for a couple of years without having to launch from the Steam client.
Some people can launch directly from the Frontier launcher without Steam. I believe that option became unavailable at some point though for new users as FD wanted people using a distribution platform like Steam.

I'm wondering how two accounts on one PC will affect tools like EDMC which draws data from one specified directory location. Is this where I need to learn about running a virtual machine so I can have duplicate tools supporting both accounts?

I can't speak for EDMC (never used it) but I know that EDDiscovery will let you choose which commander(s) you want the data uploaded for.

EDMC works fine for me - the two launchers write to the same journal files in a directory under my user profile (a special LoadGame event indicates which commander is running) and EDMC switches between the two sets of Frontier/INARA/EDSM accounts.
