Safest Place to Afk....

... is apparently in a high res!

(Not including being docked)

I've tried afking in the following places, with the following results.

Supercruise @ 30km/s - interdicted
Random drop in normal space - random spawn attack
Outside a station (inside no fire zone) - suicidal scan, wanted.
Mining in a empty belt - attacked
In a high res - scanned and never attacked, not even by FDLs. They run away. WINNER!

I haven't tried landed on a planet or in the SRV, because I don't do it all that often, so I've never had to go afk while there...

Anyone tried any other odd places to afk, with unexpected results?

If i'm going to AFK somewhere other than inside a hangar, it's definitely somewhere about 100 ls or more perpendicular to the systems ecliptic with most systems shut down to minimize signature.

Going AFK almost anywhere else in a populated system is just asking to see the re-buy screen.

I always quit to main menu (not all the way to the desktop). Nothing bad has ever happened to me then, and getting back into the game takes seconds.

<2,000Ly away from core, doesn't matter if SC or normal space. The only thing that'll kill you is heat damage, hitting a planet or running out of fuel.

25-30 clicks away from the center of a combat area is pretty quiet. Nice to recharge shields, check the power management, bring up the maps, go get a beverage without having to leave a HAZREZ etc.

I should probably explain, I play ED at work sometimes, on my laptop, so if I get a customer I don't have long to do anything. For some reason , opening the main menu takes 10-20 seconds. Plus on top of that, the 15 second combat timer. I can't keep a customer waiting for 25-35 seconds while I faff with my slow laptop. So I've been mastering the art of afk'ing...
At home, its fine, I can open the menu in a second and log out.

But yeah, for me, it turns out, a res is the safest place to be when I'm at work and its quiet so I wanna have a play on ED.
(I just have to avoid tough wings)
I've tried smuggling, that was a terrible idea. Trading was actually worse. Mining was OK, but the randomness of spawns was annoying.

By far the worst place to go afk is hyperspace.... Lol
Drop out, full speed in to a star, usually a super hot one... And no heat sinks!

You exit the CZ somewhere around 30km from the beacon. If you exit the CZ by flying away too far and then re-enter, you'll get a murder bounty for each ship you destroy.

Odd...
Plenty of folks who thought they could AFK in a RES - only to find they've been rammed to death while being stationary ;)

afking in RES or CZ, right outside a station, or in a low-wake is generally safe. It's relatively rare to get followed by an NPC if you have no active missions and no cargo.

If you low wake out of supercruise at a random point and then accelerate in any direction, you're going to be safe afking. Just make sure you're beyond scanner range from your drop point and clear of contacts before you leave. I've done this many times while getting up to make meals and handle interruptions.

I wouldn't recommend leaving in a RES because occasionally those FDL's just open fire for no reason.

I may be the odd one out here, but if I need to take a biobreak or step away from the pilots chair for any reason, if I'm planning on coming right back and resuming my game I don't quit to the menu. It's all part of the immersion, I guess. Find a "safe" place to leave the ship to its automated systems while I leave the bridge to hit the head.

SC at max on a vector perpendicular to the system ecliptic seems to be pretty safe for the most part - you're departing all system masses so fast that nobody can catch you, because if they are chasing you they are closer to the system than you are, deeper in the gravity well(s), and can't build up overtake speed.
