Saitek X55 RHINO - problems

Hi CMNDRs,

I have a Saitek X55 that I got especially for ED, so past several days I was trying Gamma and tweaking X55 settings.
I have encountered a couple of problem with HUD may be somebody can help with it.
1) Settings tab in HUD doesn't work (all the buttons are greyed out, calibration testing doesn't work) until I unplug and plug back one of pcs.
2) Even after I do that, usually some(not all and that is even more weird) of the deadzone and curve settings are reset to default.
3) Calibration testing in Windows8 Control_Panel/Devices never works, just there is nothing on the Test tab except text.

Does any one have the same problems? Or maybe someone has solutions to them? Don't tell that I should've bought CH:) I like X55 a lot but this settings reset very annoying.

My X-55 is fine.
I didn't bother using the Saitek software other than the driver as it's not necessary for ED.
If you do want to do things like adjusting curves etc... then perhaps you'll need it. But it's not essential for the game.
I plugged it in, Windoze recognised it, ran ED, set up my buttons in the game, and away I went.
Job done.
Not bothered with calibration or anything else offered by the Saitek software.

That does not bode well..............my X55 gets delivered tomorrow.
It works if you start HUD and then unplug/plug devices and leave HUD running. Just doing it every time is a bit annoying.

And the software is quite useful for keybindings. Of course you can avoid it and bind all switches in game(all the switches work) but then you loose functions of rotaries, mouse and slider. I also have one button docking request setup through HUD.
You can set deadzones in game but you can't adjust the curves.
I think it is also possible to calibrate in Windows but it does't work for me.

Sorry to hear about your issues Tandko. Sounds like the controllers might be dropping out or not initialising properly - but that's just a guess.

I have just got my X55 a few days back and started configuring (haven't tested it in space yet), but not running into the issues you mention myself. Only immediate thing that comes to mind is to try USB ports direct off the mainboard (ie no hubs etc) if you can. Probably something you have tried though.

I have the Saitek software installed although as Cmdr Dave mentioned its not really needed it seems. Although, two controls do not register in ED directly, being the little thumb button (nipple) on the Throttle (wanted to set this to thrust but doesn't seem to be programmable), and likewise the slider on your thumb of the Throttle doesn't seem to be programmable, which I was going to try with landing gears or perhaps reverse thrust.

@ Cmdr Dave - Just curious do you use the nipple or slider on the Throttle? If so were you able to program directly in ED or did it need to be done via the Saitek software? I've got a bit lost once I started looking into the Saitek software .. not the most user friendly I have seen.

Many thanks and good luck Tandko.

This is a known problem with the X-55 and Windows 8.1, it's on their support site. Whether or not it will get fixed is anyone's guess. It can happen to the stick or the throttle or both after a certain amount of time (Like if you reboot your PC or it goes to sleep or whatever). It does not happen on Windows 7, it does not happen on Windows 8, running the driver, software, or installation in Windows 7/8/Administrator compatability mode does not fix it.

What you have to do is uninstall the X-55 software and drivers. This means going to Add and Remove Programs and uninstalling it there. Then you have to go to your device manager and uninstall all the devices related to it (There will be several, some listed as Human Interface Devices so check the device IDs for reference). Then you have to go into your registry and remove all the references to Saitek, Madcats and SmartTechnology left behind by the installer. Reboot your machine and reinstall the X-55 software and drivers in the order specified by Saitek's documentation.

Then it will be working again and you can program your axis curves. It will eventually bug out, but the curves will still be programmed into the stick and throttle even if it looks like they are reset. I would recommend recalibrating the stick and throttle and reprogramming the values you want for the axis settings (It will remember the settings you set previously). Even if they are already programmed correctly, change them to something else and then change them back, otherwise they may get fubarred.

Make sure everything is set how you want it to be before you next let your PC reboot/sleep as otherwise it will get stuck again and you will have to go through this all over again.

...

Additionally, always have a profile set in the X-55 software. Don't use the default "blank" profile as that causes issues with Elite. Even if you create a profile that is a copy of the default and nothing more that can solve some problems.

Also, don't plug the X-55 into a USB 3.0 port, use a USB 2.0 port. Don't use a USB 2.0 hub plugged into a USB 3.0 port, don't use any port if you can help it. Amazon sells some nice PCIx to USB 2.0 cards or if you Mobo has free internal USB 2.0 ports you can buy a USB 2.0 backplate to plug into those. If you have two USB 2.0 ports available just use those, Amazon also sells cheap USB 2.0 extension cables that are not hubs are should work well for ya.

I'd also recommend disabling selective suspend for the X-55 USB devices, either in your power settings or in the device settings for each device (There will be several, as in more than two).

Been trying to get the nipple on the throttle working for basic pitch and roll so I can drink a cup of tea in one hand and still control my speed and a bit of direction with the other whilst in SC. But no joy. I've tried the methods people have suggested but I can't make it work. Can't say I've been awfully diligent or exhaustive in my trying though so I might be missing something.
Not got the slider working either.
I have the silver rotary on the left end of the throttle set for the scanner range as it works in stepped increments.
Not managed to get the two rotaries (RTY3 & RTY4) on the base of the throttle body working or the two rotaries (G & F) on the right hand side of the throttle working for anything yet.
Although those two right hand rotaries are also buttons if you press them in and I have those buttons mapped for FA on/off and my ship's headlights.
Everything else is mapped for functions.

You can program all of this in the HUD. However mouse nipple is very inaccurate so I would not use it for thrusters. As for the RTY3&4 for sensors bind sensors +/- to a keys on the keyboard (eg, NUM+/NUM-) then go to HUD set increment on RTY as NUM+ key press and decrement as NUM-, then you'll have it. I personally think that not using HUD is just a waste of huge functionality that you may squeeze from so many switches on the throttle.

I'll have a look at this and see what I can get.

hello, i have a x55 and my joy 1(trigger) keeps firing when i presses it, like its toggled or something im not sure whats wrong with it. anyone have any ideas to help me?

I have no problem with usb3 ports. I have a usb 3 front adaptor, connected to the usb 3 terminals on the mb. I think it is all in the order of driver installation. If you do everything in the correct order you will have no problems.

I don't use the saitek software, I really have no need for it. It's worked fine for me apart from the mouse nipple not working, but I don't care about that. Make sure it's in a powered USB hub though.

I'm having a great time with my x-55. Love the feel and I'm using all buttons on it. I don't bother with the Saitek software.

The Saitek driver interface doesn't work well for me either. Fortunately everything works like gold in-game. :)
Except for the damn slider on the Throttle. The only way to get that going is to use the software, and even when you do, its glitchy at best.. -_-

Hi TANDKO,
I would be interested to know how you have set-up the one button docking request in the HUD.

Thanks in anticipation.

Yup that's true. I was planning on having the slider control the forward/backward throttle. But noooo, it doesn't work. Would be lovely to use the mode switch too. M1 for flying, M2 for landing, M3 for fighting or something. ;)
