Newcomer / Intro Saitek x65F - how to map bindings? Not working

Hi guys. really hope i'm being a dummy here...! (Its the most likely reason, tbh)

I just bought a Saitek X65F. (Yeh, its old, but a new one. I live in Kuwait, and HOTAS availability here is almost zero - It took me all day to find this one)

So, there appears to be a few controller settings I'm trying in ED, stuff like 'Keyboard & mouse', Generic Joystick', 'Empty', etc. So, I'm going into the 'Generic Joystick' setup, and trying to map the Hat button on the joystick to thrust up, down, left and right - but when I enter on that command in ED, and press the hat, ED doesn't recognise the movement of the hat.

So, OK, I think - lets just map a key to the command (?) And try to use the programming aspect of the x65 - so the x65 will simulate a key? (If that's what its for?) But actually, ED says Move 'Axis', and doesn't respond when I type the 'R' key for example, as it seems to be expecting some kind of analogue axis input?

I also tried to input that movement on 'Keyboard & mouse', and 'Custom' - they all seem to expect an analogue 'Axis' input, and the joystick hat isn't recognised...

Help....!!!

Most of the directional and rotational axis (well, all of them) can be bound both on an axis and "+,-" keys/buttons. If you are trying to bind an analogue command on a button, it won't work. Make sure you are binding the right function.

Don't use the software programming. It only confuses Elite. Set the Saitek software to default and only check that all buttons, axes and POVs work and do the rest in Elite.

Btw. doesn't Elite have a default profile for X65? Try the roll-down menu at the top.

Oh, and welcome to the family. :)

I cant find anything other than the stuff like 'Generic Joystick', 'Empty' or 'Keyboard & Mouse', stuff like that. Not seen anything device specific - am I missing something?

I also cant get any other option when I try to choose the thrusters input other than an 'Axis' input, for which it doesn't recognise the hat input.

Have I bought the wrong HOTAS? I'll try it again today - after I just put some new drivers on....

(Thanks for help btw - its really appreciated!)

I own and love the X65f. I don't bother with bindings, I use the Saitek software to program the stick to provide key press's to the game. The reason that this is better, is because the software allows you to program the pinkie and slider switch to shift modes. The slider has 4 positions. So you can program each button on the joy stick to do 4 different things depending on the switch position. For some reason, FD has never provided a default set of bindings for the X65f even though they have done so for some joy sticks that have less users in the game.

Another point. You need a LARGE dead zone for the X and Y axis on the X65f. With mechanical joy sticks you are blocking actual motion. With the X65, which is VERY sensitive, you are blocking pressure! The dead zone has to be wide enough to allow the program to ignore any slight pressure on the other axis. For example when you move the stick left and right along the X-axis, you will find that it is impossible to do this without causing some motion along the Y-axis. You will need a much wider dead zone than with a mechanical stick. Don't worry about the large dead-zone limiting stick performance. Remember the stick reads pressure not motion. Throw is only limited by how hard you can press. One more thing the X65 really benefits from being fastened down if you want precise control. PM me and I can send you a copy of my ED Profile for the X65 and answer any questions you have. Oh and buy a set of rudder pedals. They work much better than the pressure sensor twist rudder on the X65f. Can you say awkward! Enjoy your X65f. It is a cool stick once it is setup properly.

I am reading your second message and I too have upon occasion had problems binding the joy stick axis to the ED options profile. For me, this usually happens when a new build is released. Not with every build but every now and then. What I do is 'restore' my last profile backup. It already contains the axis bindings for X, Y, and Z and my Z2 (i think) rudder pedals. I have always found that MUCH easier than trying to rebind the axis from scratch. Below is a link to a google Drive folder that contains my ED Options profile backup, and Saitek X65f profile to program the stick. PM me if you have questions

Been using an X65f for a few years now, and yeah I agree with all said here.

Although the lack of support for buttons seems to only be on the throttle - the stick has always accepted input in every game I've played with it.

PS. If can you can get used to it, having analog control over strafe is very useful.
I use the throttle rotaries for it as in below picture, but it can be hard to adapt to in the beginning, as one needs to remember to "turn off / recenter" the rotary. :D

This^^

I've done the same thing on my X55. These dials are great on planets!
I fly FAoff and to be able to set a precise amount of constant thrust in any direction is invaluable.

Do you still happen to have a copy of your ED profile for the X65f?

I use the top rotary as my secondary fire button. It allows me to do discovery scanner or kill warrant without having to hold down

Can anyone share an updated key map? I used the one provided by Borgkube but 1.8.1.8 version does not seem to work on 3.0.

Hello pilots.
I am aware of this post is getting pretty old, but I manage to make the X-65F software work inkl. the keybinding function.
So I just want to post this, in case of someone else might find this usefull.

I used the Windows diagnostic tools on it, and found out the keybinding function would work in Windows 8, 8 bit color mode. :)
