Samsung Odyssey HMD Windows Mixed Reality - much better resolution in VR

My Samsung Odyssey HMD Windows Mixed Reality headset is arriving next week. Now that it has Steam VR support (beta now but officially due 15 November) has anyone tried Elite Dangerous using it? From what I hear, it has a much better resolution and therefore also better results when super sampling.

Anyone with the Samsung headset (or one of the other Mixed Reality headsets) tested it yet with Elite?!

I'll report back here next week when mine arrives. A sharper display would be awesome.

I look forward to reading about your experience. My understanding is that the resolution is better, but not quite enough to fix the screen-door issue. I hope you like your new toy!

and they unfortunatelly using amoled „pen-tile” display like vive and oculus. I dont think it will be even close to pimax 8k clarity

Will do. Surprised no one in forum land hasn't already tried the beta support yet with a Windows Mixed Reality headset.

Not sure I know the difference between an amoled (or an amoled pen-tile screen) compared to an LCD, etc. Pimax 8k has a modified LCD I believe that is reportly creating impressive visuals.
Either way, whatever produces a sharper image, vibrant colours, deep blacks and less screen door effect is fine by me :)

I only can compare it with my DK2, but I have buyed a Lenovo and the resolution is much better, the screen door is minimal and virtually I can't see any difference between the amoled screen and the LCD.
I believed amoled would be far superior than LCD even do to low persistence, but actually I am very surprised of the Lcd image quality.
I am waiting for the 15 to test ED in steamvr.

Of course not but it's a fraction of the price and is out now (almost) pimax 8k .. well let's see when it launches. I hope it's on time but we shall see. Jan / Feb seems a quick turn around to me esp as there is apparently at least 1 more Dev kit coming before it gets into mass production.

I am reckoning June before all ksers have their kit and I think that is optimistic. I hope I am wrong tho. I am excited to try it.

Now that steam vr support has gone public, does anyone have a review on the Samsung Odyssey WMR HMD? I am very interested in it for Elite, so I would love to hear any feedback from someone who has already tried it, especially if they're coming from Rift or Vive.

Did you even LOOK in the forum before posting?

I ***HAVE*** already tried the Samsung Odyssey, provided feedback, and I did come from using a Rift (for over a year). The Samsung OLED image and resolution is far superior to the Rift, there is no screen door effect, and tracking is spot on. See the following thread:

OLED is superior than LED in almost every way. Only reason pimax is using led is to keep the price down and OLED is harder to manufacture so they would have a harder time getting OLED to meet their requirments. two 4k oled screens at that resolution would drive the cost up a lot.

Got one from the Microsoft Store tonight (Managed to sell my old GTX 1060 to put money towards this)

It's going back tomorrow for a refund

Either my unit is broken, or there is a fundamental issue with them - It's supposed to support an IPD of 60-73 using a manual slider (the software adjustment in windows is grayed out) - well with mine dialed down windows reports it at almost 60.5 - I have an IPD of 60mm which means that for me everything is slightly out of focus and text VR and especially in Elite is basically unreadable.

I was expecting the image quality to be better than my Pimax 4k BE - it's not, if anything it's actually worse. Not sure if this is just because SteamVR support has got issues, the steam super-sampling does not seem to make much of a difference at all in Elite and using the Elite Super sample brings the FPS to it's knee's.

But nonetheless, the IPD issue is a deal breaker for me - makes this thing completely unusable for anything

bummer -- I had such high hopes for it as well

That's a huge shame - I'm sorry for you.

Do you think that the god rays you complained about on the other thread are due to the incorrect IPD, or are the Fresnel lenses are worse than those on Rift/Vive? Are the Fresnel rings more widely spaced in the Odyssey?

It's sad to read this. I think it's the first really bad review I read from the sansung headset. This is reminding me of one of the first reviews of the Pimax 8K prototype when it was said that the problems pointed out in that review were due to the IPD and then, in the other presentations, they improved it, and apparently the IPD was the cause.

Might be the pentile layout of the display. The high hz oled should perform better in response times and such, but that's not really that important in elite most of the time.

I wonder if the ipd is even going down to 60.5, on my rift I normally use 64 but I can still see everything clearly at 66.

Make sure you go into settings (windows desktop), select Mixed reality/Headset Display/Visuals and chooce either "High" or "Very high (beta)".
