They go way back. All the way since the start. A lot of people believe they are connected with Raxxla, some people believe they are some key. But one day, completely removed from the game. No trace of them. Had a friend who asked support why his Sap-8 Container disappeared, they said a long the lines of "They have been removed from the game" It was rumoured they were around still but nobody ever found any. In the end people gave up. Then suddenly a week after the new patch comes, people are finding them again? They have suddenly come back. But, the question is, WHY?

Quick googling tells me they contain a crystaline shard of unknown origin. To me, that makes them sound Guardian. Could there be a plan to build a Guardian armed capital ship?

They were also around several years ago, so could it be that a guardian site was found and exploited? Then the powers realised the potential of the crystals and started gathering them for their own purposes?

Oh, that is interesting!

It could've been that they were created ages ago with the Guardians in mind for future prep, but ended up in the game by accident (it has happened before with numerous bugs)...

This re-emergence is very interesting...

Where can we find them? Could be worth doing the following with the SAP 8 Containers:

1) Take them and try them in Thargoid Bases
2) Take them and try them in Guardian Structures (Data Core)
3) Gift them to Thargoids and see their reaction

Sounds suspiciously like a Guardian Relic if you ask me :D However, it could be a different type of relic...

Thing is, SAP-8 Cores, much like Trinkets of Hidden Fortune and a few other things, were never found to relate to anything.

For me at least for now, they're "just another item of salvage, with wild yet fruitless speculation attached to it"

Yet they were removed, and then suddenly re-added in the latest update? That is a cause for speculation.

They made a short guest appearance in the 3.0 beta. Their return was expected in the release, but they were missing.

They now travel with their new companions 'Antimatter containment unit' and 'Prohibited research material'.

This has Military Drives written all over it. Keep an eye on Sirius Corporation.

Reminds me of the "ELITE/Founder Mysterio Courier Missions" that talked about those Crystals supposedly containing Coordinates and being originally sourced by the Dark Wheel.

Like most other stuff before it, it turned out to be meaningless fluff text just to waste people's time and send them off chasing ghosts.

Color me intrigued not before
- such a container can be shot open
- a resulting Data Crystal can be retrieved
- that Data Crystal can be analyzed
- and Data extracted using nothing but our Ship or SRV in-game tools

Until that happens, it remains "yet another fluff Salvage Commodity" or "Future Content Placeholder" in my books if one is optimistic.

The idea to toss them into either a Thargoid "FX machine" or a Guardian "Blueprint Printer" isn't bad though. Worth a shot.

My stomach still cramps when I read that infamous line :D
(my personal favorite infamous quotes are others though, #1 : You don't need a Spreadsheet to play the Game and #2 : It was a Design Decision)

Oh all the bad memories those lines bring back...

But seriously, I am very happy they are back. It was supposed to have been one of the first real mysteries FDEV put into the game. It was a shame when it was pulled. I never understood why. Even if it looked like no-one was working on it, it would have been cool if someone stumbled upon it years later. But apparently it was a time critical thing, and that time elapsed.

Also I think SAP 8s where described as a crystal inside a containment cell. Sound Guardian to anyone?

IIRC there was also a suggestion that they contained some kind of data, location data, I think. But they were mysteriously pulled without explanation, perhaps we found the thing they would have lead us to (UA shell??).

The missions associated with them were very mysterious and cool sounding.

Sounds like that trailer clip or promo pic where some ship drops relic (cannot recall if he shots at it) in front of thargoid and he panicked.
Object inside the relic? There was some story in-game about Guardians-crystals connection... and some debate on forum about life from crystals IIRC (or not, I am old)
